So rugby players didn't think they would get head injuries?  I am going to sue my former swim coach for making me get in water.

Some comedy hasn't held up as well as other comedy.  Decide for yourself.

I thought being brain damaged was a requirement to play rugby

My dad was not an educated man, nor a particularly intelligent man.  High school graduate, one semester of college before dropping out.  Yet despite his lack of education, he advised the teenage Crepes not to play play football (or any contact sport).  Because aside from the usual injuries (broken bones, sprains, etc.), receiving repeated blows to the head was bad for you.  That was in the late 70s/early 80s, and even in my teens I knew that was the case without needing to be told by my dad.

So when I read stories like this, I have to wonder just how goddamn dumb you have to be to be surprised that bashing your head repeatedly for years has consequences.

Rugby players knew they would get head injuries, they just didn't know the long term effects of head injuries like early onset dementia.

Rugby League had (and still has) an exceptionally toxic macho culture and it was expected to play on even if you were knocked loopy.
