Eh, seems like a lot of underwear knotting of a shiatty database query that sent out these letters to all former customers rather than just former customers that owed them money.

It's been all downhill since they dropped Corn Cob TV.

He is a lawyer that specializes in lemon laws and consumer protection talking about a story in the LA Times.
Not the most random guy and most newspapers would at least want to see the letter before publishing such an article.

The column link, and yeah...this is some shady BS.

I've spent 15 years dealing with TWC/Charter/Spectrum.  Never blame malice when you can blame incompetence.  This company is bad at everything.  At network management, at best practices, at work distribution, at internal communication, etc.  They copy everything Comcast does, but they do it worse.

They're probably just being incompetent again.

Waitasecond, it's not a technical term, is it? It's just a new slang for hand-wringing.

And I'll be clear, this is professionally.  I've probably spent 1000 hours in their labs and another 500 in calls and meetings.

They also have super abusive management.  I don't know how their engineers put up with it.

And Comcast is a professional operation.  I know w everyone hates them because they're a cable company, but they're great to work with professionally, their engineers are knowledgeable, and they make few network management errors.  When the phone rings from Charter, my first thought is "What did you Fark up that you'll spend a week blaming me for until you realize it was your fault?"

the impressive thing here is that a non-customer actually opened and read a letter from spectrum instead of just placing it directly into the recycling bin when received

Yeah, until I see more, I'm going with incompetence over malice on the letter.  These are Pakleds writing letters, not Romulans plotting to kidnap your dog.

It's not incompetence. It's a spammer's tactic. You send out a million of these letters, you only need a small percentage of people to fall for it and... PROFIT!

I have Spectrum for Internet. They like to make every bit of mail they ever send you sound like an urgent billing problem.

Yesterday I got one from them that said "IMPORTANT NOTICE, Open Immediately."

It was addressed to "Fireproof or Current Resident."

I get those letters all the time. Usually, they try to pimp their TV service. Unfortunately, for me, Spectrum is the only choice for broadband. Spectrum is universally hated around here. AT&T is upgrading their infrastructure to fiber, and if they ever get to my house, I'm drop kicking Spectrum to the curb.

South Park's episode "Informative Murder Porn" perfectly describes Spectrum's customer service.

I currently have Spectrum as well.

And an "Ethical Consumerism Dilemma."

Spectrum basically sucks. Especially since I have a Plex server I like to view when I'm not at home.

We have an alternative. Buuuuuuuuut. It's AT&T fiber...

I'm probably the last holdout on my road that refuses to use spectrum. They visit at least once a month trying.
I dislike them so much that I still use ATT DSL which really sucks. I also hate att because the refuse to setup fiber service even though their fiber runs right in front of my house. Going to give starlink a shot soon.

At least AT&T supports NewsMax.

Just got fiber from TDS last week.  I've already disconnected my Spectrum modem, and I just need to take it in to the local Spectrum store to return it.

I'm so glad to be done with them.

There's been other people reporting this shiat as well. This was even on Fark a couple weeks back as well.

Basically it comes down to sending a letter back, CC'ing the legal department, stating some a$$hole is signing the company name to stupid letters.

Make sure you keep the return receipt. Copies etc.

Cable companies *love* to say you never returned hardware.

I swore I would never go back to TWC/Spectrum. Then Verizon sold FioS to Frontier. So I was forced back to the "lesser" evil. Now I just pay for internet and ignore the twenty offers a month to get their cable package(and go paperless with billing!!).
