Moscow Mitch's whole plan was to make the Democrats use reconciliation to raise the debt ceiling instead of being able to use it to pass the social spending package.  Good job delivering for him as well as any Republican, Manchin.

But how will a minority party hold legislation favored by vast majorities hostage without it?

So my limited understanding of the reconciliation at this point is that it can be used to pass bills with a simple majority in the senate (as opposed to a supermajority of 60?).

However it can only be used 3(?) times and then everything else requires 60 in the senate due to the filibuster being allowed to remain (because of this asshat's vote against dropping it).

I'm not sure though if the 3 jabs at reconciliation are limited to 2 years or 4 years but it seems like an odd rule.

If I am correct on at least most of the above and what I've read about Manchin he is just trying to get them to waste one of their simple majority votes to kneecap them from using it for the wider plans that actually means something as opposed to a stupid technicality (debt ceiling) that has been weaponized by bad actors.

And now he is trying to act like a hero?

Ya... f*ck that guy.

The democrats don't have a majority in the Senate. It's a 50-50 tie.

They do have a tie-breaking vote in VP Harris, but she's not a senator so it's incorrect to say the dems have a majority in the senate.

/Not that it would make any difference even if they did have a majority

They can do both in the same package but it means going back to the start and amending the reconciliation instructions to include raising the debt ceiling.

Mitch knows democrats won't waste it needlessly, he knows they can bundle it together. His goals are 2 fold.

One: allow his flock to take a strong stand on not raising the debt ceiling for their primaries and general election races. It plays well to their ill informed base.

Two: by making democrats raise the debt ceiling alone, he frames the national debt as a democrat only problem. Something that democrats are driving up needlessly. He is by all means attempting to was his and his fellow republicans hands of their involvement in creating the debt by playing to this narrative, and Manchin is enabling his ass to do so. A vastly significant portion of that debt is bush wars, bush economic collapse and bush/trump tax cuts. These asshats are atleast equally responsible if not more responsible for the debt and they want to pretend only democrats raise the debt ceiling and spend. Fark them, and fark Manchin for enabling their bullshiat.

They have a majority specifically because of Harris. She is the president of the Senate.

It's potentially 3 times but most likely only 2 (the number of times depends on the subjects being addressed by each use) and it's per year not term of congress so they get 2 more in 2022 but it's an election year so big swings aren't likely.

I don't think reconciliation rules allow them to abolish the debt limit. But they could raise it to $500 trillion or so. That would make it irrelevant for a while. Hopefully forever.

It's a number of times that a unelected arbiter decides on based on what direction their Fart wafts at the start of a fiscal year. The contents of the bill are determined via what the predominant odor is and whether the party in power can convince the farther that it really doesn't stink. And then the body gets wring they're hands until a set of conditions are met for everyone who is not going to vote for it anyway.

Seems as good a place to note this as any, but while in the Caribbean a few weeks back I learned of the Manchineel tree, which every single part of is apparently super caustic. Even just standing near the tree in the rain can result in serious skin burns.

Do you think there's a family linkage?

I'm all for that. Calling out people who are just out to rile others up doesn't mean I don't support BBB and other Democratic goals. Just realistic about what can be accomplished with the 50-50 Senate.

But...the money will disincentivize all of the wage slaves from doing their menial jobs. This is what Republicans believe.

You can also remind them that Donald Trump did more to forward the cause of the universal wage than any other president.

For all its faults the office of the parliamentarian is one of the few parts of the senate that both Republicans and Democrats have held sacred. Much as I want to criticise, id rather the role exist in its non-partial manner than the Republicans bring in some toady and Fark around even more than they already do.

Start stripping things away from red states until the balance is covered. FEMA for TX or FL, gone. Military bases in red states - gone, any federal contracts to any companies in red states - gone.

Both cutting spending and saving money and reducing the federal government. Win/win/win.
