I did get off a speeding ticket once by doing something similar.  The cop told me I was doing 80mph.  I told him that was impossible because I hadn't been driving for an hour.  He looked at me and blinked a couple of times, said "Nope, not heard that one before.  Just slow down, all right?" and walked back to his car and drove off.  Guessing it was close to lunch or end of shift.

I hate reckless drivers. Isn't 100 kph just over 60 mph? Doesn't seem too egregious.. I know the posted speed limit is 60. Smells like a speed trap.

In a wide open space? Sure, I'd say the limit was set too low unless there are pavement quality or geographical conditions that necessitate a lower limit.

But in a busy area, the limit is low to reduce risk. Trucks can't stop easily and if you're driving in an area with turning traffic and pedestrians, you want to go slower in case someone does something stupid.

I don't know where you are at in the area but I frequently travel between Cincinnati, Chicago, Des Moines, Atlanta and Detroit and that is not the case in any of these places.

Indiana will actively ticket you if you are in the passing lane not hauling farking balls.

You can do damned near whatever you want on the Trans-Canada in rural areas on twinned roads and probably get away with it. Doing 100+ on a part of the Trans-Can that goes through a town is generally going to land you in major trouble, though, and there are a lot of people who don't seem to understand that the whole of the Trans-Can isn't at full highway speeds.

Highway 11 in Latchford is not a freeway like the Interstate. Not even close.

Also, very rarely do you get a speed limit on any non-freeway road in a town or city that is above 60km/h in Ontario. And generally you're okay doing 10km/h over, maybe 15. 40km/h over, not a chance; that'll get you pulled even on the freeways.

Where I'm at that would be a minimum 45 and most probably a 55mph zone.

To be fair. My opinion is skewed based off of where I live and travel but houses/business entrances/side roads be damned if it isn't a sub division or a school zone it's 45 or 55

I'm somewhat dubious that this is true, but I grew up in an area where there was a 60mph highway with an intersection. It killed an awful lot of people before they finally built a proper interchange, because vehicles moving 60mph interacting with vehicles that are at a dead stop is a really terrible idea.

I was hitchhiking somewhere in the north Texas panhandle when a trucker picked me up. That was rare, even in the early 90s. He didn't have a trailer. Was going to Garden City, KS to get a load. Rare luck, as that's where I was headed. Anyway, he took some old farmers' back roads up through the Oklahoma panhandle. Cracked pavement built in the FDR years, all but empty. And put the goddamn hammer down.
You've not hauled ass in a vehicle until you've been in a Peterbilt doing 100+ MPH.

That sounds like an unpleasant place to walk, or enter/leave businesses or cross streets... anything other than blow through on the highway.  This is a town (albeit a small one), not an isolated driveway here or there.

Remember, this is still conservative country. Walking is satanism. It's giant diesel truck that will never tow a thing with emissions removed, rusted out GM 1500 that's "a good running truck" as it fires on 2 cylinders and leaks more oil than it used fuel, and hoverrounds.

In Indiana, the state highway patrol will pass you on the right, because you're only going 10 over the limit on the interstate.  Yes, this happened to me just last week.  They'll also pass you on the back roads if you're not going at least 10 over on them.

Don't see the issue with the article, though.  I know if Ohio, if you are driving more than 30mph over the limit, they can and will up the charge to reckless driving, and add reckless endangerment if you have passengers in the car with you.

Back in the 90s a buddy of mine was driving through Ontario and doing about 100.. Promptly got pulled over, and the cop asks him if he knew how fast he was going.. "Yeah, 100, just like the sign says!".. Cop blinks for a second, then remembers the michigan plates and peeks at the dashboard. "No, sir, you're in Canada now, those speeds are km/h, not mph."  "Uhh, what?"  *in a clearly exasperated voice* "use the little yellow numbers here, not the big white ones!".  "Ooohhhh... Sorry sir!"

Managed to pull off the "ignorant American" and not get a ticket.

we don't have that charge in the states. I'm guessing sunny just found the wording comical. I'm an old and only recently learned it exists up there (in the form of behaving in a way eg as a pedestrian that distracts drivers).

Canadian here - 100 kph in a 60 zone is absolutely balls-to-the-wall fast.  A 60 kph zone in Ontario normally has driveways that open on to it, making it unpredictable when you'd have to slow down or stop.  A loaded truck going 100 would obliterate Joe Average pulling out of his driveway.

2021-10-26 7:55:25 PM
Here's the deal for driving in Ontario.

Outside of residential areas where the speed limit is a hard 40:
If the speed limit is 60, then you can drive 80 without getting a ticket.
If the speed limit is 80, then you can drive 100 without getting a ticket.
If the speed limit is 100 (the highest speed limit) then you can drive 120 without getting a ticket.

A cop who gives you a ticket for going 120 in a 100 then it's socially recognized that that cop is an asshole.
If you go 121 in a 100 however you take your lumps because you realize you violated the social contract on speed limits. So yeah, if it's a residential area you stick to the speed limit. If the speed limit posted is 60 or higher you limit your speed to no more than 20 over the speed limit. Cop gives you ticket for going 20 over, he's the asshole. You go more than 20 over, you're the asshole. If you actually drive the speed limit on a 400 series highway and DON'T drive 20 over, then you're the asshole again.

It's the reason why Canadians are generally peaceful law abiding citizens. We get all our anti-social criminal behaviour out  of our system by going 20 over the posted speed limit.
