No, it's not.

And a beautiful body on a non-functional frame doesn't get you where you want to be.

Back in the olden days of my youth my 80-year-old Sunday school teacher drove an E-type.  British racing green with tan interior.  I always thought it was funny, but damn it was a pretty car

Gorgeous car to look at, rather clumsy to drive. Over the years I've thought about getting a 4.2L Series II, but the constant fiddling that has to be done to keep it running would bring me to my senses.

Think of the worst girlfriend you ever had.

Oh, an aside, I've been seeing some "interesting" articles trying to claim that it costs more to charge an electric vehicle than it does to fill a gas tank.

But the "charge an electric" side of the ratio has probably inflated numbers, as well as  installation costs of new chargers, state taxes on vehicles and other extremities added in while the gas side is only the cost of gas pumped.

Just FYI as you peruse your reading day.  It smells like that PR stunt from a couple of years ago where Old Space was trying to claim that SpaceX couldn't afford reusable rockets anymore, and was pushing that claim out to forums and press as best they could.

I don't care for the Daytona coupe.  But for some reason, despite the Coupe coming first and the convertible later, somehow the convertible is damn near sex on wheels to me.

In terms of Jaguar sports cars, I'm more partial to the XK150 for some reason.  But overall, I'm super fond of this from Alfa.

I love the look of the E-type. But it has one big flaw. The body is a little too low. The windshield sticks up too far and looks odd.

What is a car?

You know, you look at designs of say... computers. They have changed so much to reflect WHY we have them and HOW we use them. Phones. Shoes. Sunglasses.

I am sure we have not settled on the iconic look yet. And it might wind up that there will be an explosion of styles and expressions, with people slipping on styles and looks just like people buy covers for their phones.

THIS may be the most beautiful US (little to no European influence) car.

An argument could also be made for the 1969 Dodge Charger, though it's obvious where they got the inspiration for the Coke bottle rear fenders.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs for a car company when getting bought out by Ford means the vehicles actually become MORE reliable.

Can't remember who said it, but some wag once described Jaguar vehicles as "decorative, but not functional".

I'm reminded of a gag from Married With Children.  Al Bundy's neighbor started telling him about how much he loved his Jaguar.  Then he goes, "Why, just the other day I was telling all the regulars on the bus route about how great the car was...", implying it's in the shop so much he is now on a first name basis of everybody on the local bus route.

/it was funnier the first time around

As long as it is pre ugly-bumper (1969-1973). The only issue is accessing the rear of the engine.

And the moment in Mad Men where Lane the embezzler decides to take his life by piping the exhaust from the E-Type in the garage into the passenger compartment, and then it won't start.

2021-10-25 2:53:40 PM
The E-Type wasn't terrible for it's era, reliability-wise. Being very simple helped there, and the early sixties were a different era as far as that stuff went; most cars weren't expected to last five years. There's a lot of modern replacement kits that address the worst of the problems, including fuel injection and electronic ignition setups.

Performance-wise, it was never a stand-out (except maybe in horsepower, those straight-sixes were pretty potent for the period, and disc brakes were novel at the time). Brand-new, they were more Grand Tourer than Sports Car, and by today's standards it's a dog, but it's a pretty way to get places. A typical Corolla would get you there sooner, and probably in more comfort, but would you be happier?

If I won a lottery jackpot, I'd own one for a while. Then I'd sell it for about what I paid for it (including running costs, probably). I'd prefer a Mark 1 or 2 Saloon, honestly.

I've become a fan of Iain Tyrrell. He is a go-to guy for maintenance and restoration of classic and exotic autos.  He recently started a YouTube channel.  I was particularly amused to watch him synchronize multiple carbs.  He doesn't use a flow meter.  Instead he sticks a hose down the throat and listens until, as he puts it, 'It's making a good thump'

Ahh, I meant the Chargers I saw when searching for "Leno cars" were all ugly so I pulled up a pic of a nice looking charger.
