The Chicago ones are more of meat eaters. Tons of people here have tiny veggie and fruit gardens that they won't touch. dropped some chopped steak on the ground in my back yard, went to go get a broom, and that shiat was gone in 30 seconds.

Are you sure raccoons didn't get it?

I live in Chicago(West Side) and I have noticed an uptick in rats after one of my neighbors had a couple of trees in his back yard cut down, and a few other trees fell down because of storms, leading to raccoons going else where, raccoons eat rats.

What I did was put a bowl of rum and coke in a corner of my backyard with some oranges in it, so that the rats will come and eat the the rum saturated fruit and drink the rum and coke, and because they cannot throw up, they end up dying of alcohol poisoning. Guess what, they just about disappeared in a few weeks

I need to try this.  The rats eat the oranges off the tree in my yard, I think they'd go for the rum'n'coke sangria option.

Suburbs and rural areas have plenty of rodents.  And also the coyotes which are partially sustained by the rodents.  Fewer dumpsters and other man-made food sources, though, so the balance is different.
BUT Clearly we do need to release giant hungry wild canines in the cities.

Let the coyotes clean up the rats, and then we release the mountain lions to take care of the coyotes

Yep. Most people will say to use grain alcohol, but being Chicago, Ever Clear isn't easily available, and I have plenty of rum on hand.

In Natural History many years ago I learned a horrifying thing. Rats in a number of metropolitan areas including NYC (where the author did her grad work) had grown big enough that they were mostly outside the prey-range for feral cats. Instead of cats eating rats both competed for garbage

What are you talking about? All the suburbs in the Bay Area have rodent problems. The rats climb the orange trees..
