A few thousand racist rednecks storming the capitol, in retrospect, would be nothing compared to millions of well-armed, highly-intelligent, well-financed liberals across the country moving as one.  We were over 200k-strong for just a freaking appearance of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in DC years ago.  Really, I think we're all just waiting for these farkers to do something bright-line, and then the true finding-out phase will begin.  They came extremely close when they almost murdered congressmen. They probably saw it as having almost succeeded with a coup, but I see it as having almost succeeded with sealing their own fate.

What I'm about to write I take ZERO pleasure in.  It's depressing beyond belief and it farking sucks that we're living through this at all.

2020 was America's last legitimate presidential election.

To be fair, the door to this horrible reality was slowly opened over the course of several decades.  W's first election was a travesty that should never have happened, but it validated the idea that it's OK for America to have minority rule.

Outside of 2004, you have to go all the way back to farking 1988 to find a Republican president elected by a majority of the American public.  On some level, Republican voters know that they're losing the cultural wars, so they're using every other mechanism to influence our lives.  Their desperation is so severe that they're not above raiding the farking Capitol itself to threaten the lives of lawmakers.

We want so badly to believe that the system itself will somehow engage a self-correcting procedure to keep our downward spiral from accelerating.  It isn't coming.  2024 will see a Republican elevated to the Oval Office, once again, against the wishes of the majority of the public.  The difference, this time, is that the accusations of Democratic fraud are going to be so loud and so frequent that even liberals will start questioning which way is up, and which way is down.

Will things eventually go back to some semblance of 'normal'?  Maybe, but not before a LONG period where our elections are continually rated as 'non-functioning' by international organizations who monitor this sort of thing.

The only way out is through, and we're going to see some fairly horrible stuff, unfortunately.

This is something that they really don't understand... liberals believe in democracy, some own guns, those that do have enough to arm friends, and we listen to reasonable orders from authorities. fark, 2/3rds of the libertarian party or more would take up arms on the side of the democrats when the entire concept of consensual government is threatened by nazis. These people have no real allies outside the 1 or 2 percent of the population on their side that might do something, and they will face a host of cobeligerant factions that while we don't agree with each other on public policy, we agree that nazis must die.

All of the libertarians I know personally have a positive opinion of Trump. I even noted that libertarian rags like Reason didn't seem bothered at all by Trump's statements during the election like "Stand back and stand by." As far as I can tell, libertarians can generally be bought off by a tax break or promises of tax breaks.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't count on any libertarians to defend democracy as long as those undermining it lowered taxes, allowed their bigotry, or stuck it to tech companies that libertarians don't like.

And it would help, if only people would actually do it and not sit and whine when it comes down to the crunch; or go "meh, city council elections, what difference do those make?"

Where we really are is that point in 1932 when someone should have actually shot Hitler.

Exactly this. Trump's just too full of hubris and stupidity to execute the truly complex evil plan needed to overthrow everything, but the next guy will likely be able to do so without having the narcissistic tendencies get in the way.
Someone reasonably intelligent and truly evil will pick up the ball and run with it, to disastrous effect on the country.

What you see in the koch funded press rags is not what the actual rank and file people are like, especially in all the highly populated blue states. yeah alabama "libertarians" are pretty farked up, but the raw numbers live on the west coast and in the northeast. The platform of the national party (which is a pretty farked up org because usually the worst elements care to fark around with stuff like that) is still pro-gay, pro-choice, pro-immigrant, etc. Some of the anti-corporate elements have been undone by massive koch influence from the 80s but it still survives at the local levels.

Did we learn nothing from the 2016 election? During the entire lead-up to November all I heard was "don't be ridiculous, Trump couldn't possibly win! Just look at [insert list of myriad f*ck-ups that ordinarily would have doomed any other candidate]."

He. Absolutely. Can. Still. Win. Either by cheating or possibly even legitimately. He might even be able to round up enough bobble-headed yes-men in just the right government positions to pull off a coup.

It is not, in any conceivable way, "funny."

It's well past time that we started taking this asshole seriously, because he's as serious as pancreatic cancer with exactly the same potential.

I've seen enough of these "Trump's rigging the next election, just you wait and see" articles. We ALL know that already. I want to see some article that tells us, the hoi-polloi, what to do about it. It's not inevitable that the orange turd gets elected in 2024, or even 2028.  We just don't need to roll over with our tails between our legs like a submissive dog.

Right? We're in this mess in part because online projects headed by wide eyed techno-libertarians keep "accidentally" becoming platforms for amplifying neo nazi hate speech, conspiracies, and extremist recruitment.

In this timeline , there are legions of hitlers. I wish that I was being hyperbolic but . Sadly we crossed into a bad reality about 2100 years ago.
