One look at Rand Paul is all I need to know that I'm looking at a seriously mentally ill individual.

Dr. Fauci has led a life of public service working with the AIDS community and spreading the best information about COVID that we have at the time and may have saved thousands of lives in spite of the Trump Administration.

Rand Paul is a piece of crap with hair.

Who do I listen to?

What if real life didn't sort easily and automatically into dichotomies, and required us to apply critical thought in every direction?

Rand Paul is a jackass, and Fauci is a man, with feet of clay, and a skilled political operator.  But we're going to cover this from the schoolyard angle, because clicks.

I did.  No one ever questions Fauci with the rigor this needs, they only skip across the surface with the same blue v red mentality that they approach everything from.  That's not enough for this story.

Why do not believe you? Simple.

In this matter, Fauci is correct in his analyses on the impossibility of a bat virus being manipulated into COVID-19.

Likewise, Fauci did not lie to Congress during his testimonies, as claimed by dysfunctional, stupid Republican.

Please, provide what parts of Fauci's Congressional testimonies are false.

Don't give evil a "mentally ill" excuse.  He's just a greedy, compromised traitor, not misguided or wrong because of diminished capacity.  He's a bought asset of our enemies, straight up.  He's not even like most of the Rethuglicans, who are taking these positions out of fear of their voters, he was doing of this stuff before that population had even been converted over to rampant antivax and antimask positions.  He helped CAUSE that conversion.

This framing is too simplistic.  Read the VF article.

There's a lot more we need to know, and most media outlets are treating Fauci with kid gloves (he's one of the Good Guys!) rather than asking tough, necessary questions.  This thread is helpful, nice to see someone digging:

I used to have the Christian Science Monitor in my news rotation.

They're kinda conservative, but from a paleocon perspective (Oddly enough, the CS Monitor hasn't been antivax despite its origin with the founder of Christian Science, which IS antivax) & without any of the Trumpian crap. I thought it was useful to hear what the news was like on the conservative side that was still here on Earth-1.

That changed Friday when they published an article on this Rand Paul thing. Bye CS Monitor.

/Oh & if anyone knows a somewhat decent conservative news source that's less biased than the typical Scaife bullshiat, LMK

I did read it. I also read the letter and the analysis of said letter that the article is sourced from. While I won't claim to be an expert in virology, I do know the subject well enough to understand everything in those sources and I can assure you that all of it confirms exactly what Dr. Fauci has said and none of it supports the speculation in the Vanity Fair article in the slightest.

Tufekci has shown more intellectual integrity and real objectivity than just about anyone over the last two years.  But she doesn't neatly support anyone's preferred narrative.

A Turkish socialist? That's it? That's all you got? From all of the whole of the WWW, that's it? No review of Fauci's testimony against the questions of concern. No data to reflect how a bat virus could be converted to COVID-19?

Might I remind you Zeynep Tufekci, while very intelligent in her current areas of study and writing, was first a computer programmer, now writes on social implications of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and big data, as well as societal challenges like the current pandemic, using complex and system-based thinking.

The documents she draws from do not prove Fauci lied, period. Discussions of coronaviruses within those documents are the only commonality between COVID-19 and bat coronaviruses, i.e. that noun coronaviruses.

In fact the COVID-19 virus hasn't been isolated from any of the world's 1400+ species of bat. A coronavirus with 96% of its genome in common with SARS-CoV-2 (2) has been found in a single species of bat (Rhinolophus affinis) in China. This may sound significant, but to put it in context, we share 96% of our genome with chimpanzees but we are not the same species. It is important to stress that in this pandemic it is humans that transmit COVID-19 to other humans, not bats.

Presently, we still do not know where COVID-19 came from. Scientists do agree that COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus from an animal (1,2). COVID-19 is a zoonosis, a human disease of animal origin. However, the animal source of SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the COVID-19 pandemic, has not yet been confirmed. It is likely to have its ancestral origins in a bat species (1,2) but it probably reached humans through an intermediary species (pangolins have been suggested) (3,4), or mutated within humans to be able to be transmitted between people and cause disease (3).

Coronoviridae remains a very large family of viruses. Tufekci offered no proof the Wuman labs were responsible for COVID-19 nor that Fauci lied, our original issue.

/Throwing out poor sources does not win an argument.
