If somebody like Landis or Kuhn had been in charge, all of them would've been banned, and the championship would've been stripped.

The only people surprised by pro teams cheating have the minds of 10 year olds.

The people that care are about 8.

The Astros' cheating was particularly aggregious, and they won. People don't care about cheating losers.

I already do. That's why it's become only fun to watch College and LLWS, because they seem to be the only ones still truly having fun.  Plus even if you do figure out a team's signs at those levels, it in no way guarantees an advantage given how many other things are likely to go wrong.  LLWS is particularly fun because they have pitch limits, which requires a large chunk of the team to be actually multi-talented and flexible at several positions.

A. Bartlett Giamatti would've straightened out this whole hunk of turds called MLB if given the opportunity. Baseball would be capped. Pete Rose would've been hung by the neck until dead. The Yankees would've been banned from postseason for 10 years for being assholes. The Pirates would have decent ownership. The DH would be banned FOREVER. And on and on.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs were stealing signs back in 2016. They went from "best offense in baseball" to "couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat" in the span of a year or two.

Stripping the Cubs of their fraudulently obtained World Series title and giving it to the team they beat through nefarious methods, whoever that team might be, I believe is the only just action on the table. It'd be the right thing to do.

there isn't a NO DOI big enough for this.

A couple interesting ones from this year alone.

Kevin Gausman could rarely pitch well for three games in a row his entire career. He hits a contract year at a critical point in his career, and huh, look at how well he pitch for a whole year.

Cedric Mullins could barely hit his weight until this season, probably his last chance with Baltimore somehow he manages a 30/30 season.

But Vincent didn't lick the owners' assholes during a labor dispute, so we can't have a commissioner anymore willing to stand up to the owners.

How about a commissioner that doesn't actively hate the sport. No digging up dead guys or reminiscing to eras when the majority of the players in the league today wouldn't have even been allowed to play the game. Let's not pretend those guys were all that f'n great and would do the right thing when clearly know they didn't.

To be honest, I do find it a little bit hard to get especially outraged over sign stealing.  From an amateur's perspective, even if I knew exactly what a pitch was going to be, it's not as though I'd stand a chance of hitting any of them anyway.  Obviously it's a different story for players at that level, but even still, it's hard to get emotionally worked up over it.

On balance, it's not so much that they did it, it's how shameless and brazen they were about it, and the fact that they faced exactly zero consequences despite being caught dead to rights.  Every team does what they can get away with, but most teams know how to get right up to the line without going over (or at least how to be circumspect about it when they do cross the line).  The problem with the Astros is that the complete lack of any consequences basically established that "hey, there are no actual rules anymore, do whatever you feel like and you'll get a slap on the wrist at most."   Some form of consequences were needed, not just as a punitive measure, but to maintain deterrence on the sport as a whole.  If those consequences won't come from the commission, they need to come from the other teams.

Sliding Carp: Don't want people stealing your signs?  Have better signs.

Tolerance of sign-stealing may be scalable. For example:
Team A gets a leadoff hitter to second, where he can see the catcher flashing signs to the pitcher. The battery can then switch up signs to effectively communicate.
Team B uses digital technology (hi res camera, closed circuit monitor, etc) to capture a catcher's every flinch, for every pitch.
If every MLB Team is using the latter tactic, screw them all, but especially the Dodgers for failing so hard even so.
If every other team, except one, is Team A and Team B calls Houston home, they deserve all the backlash they get.

2021-10-24 6:10:28 PM
Catchers still wiggling fingers is stupid when they can wear a note pad on their wrist. Let pitchers wear one too and just call audibles. Then the other team would need this inning's card to steal your signs.

If I were in charge, I would change the rules in MLB to what the LLWS does. Every player on the team has to play 6 consecutive outs, and bat once. Everything, even the substitution rules for pinch runners. Limit teams to 15 players and see the managers earn their money.

From a fan's standpoint there are a million little things such as that I'd like to see changed in sports but the player's union makes a smaller roster limit impossible even if everybody else wanted it which would include 100% of the public.

But there was a lot going on. It was like an arms race, almost like it was like hey, this team's doing this. This team's doing that, this team's cheating here. This team's doing this. Is it happening?  Still? No I think that aspect is completely gone of the game I think that's clean.

Suddenly after 100 years of this, its over, no more cheating?

Given how quickly MLB said there wouldn't be a wider investigation when this initially broke, I would not be surprised at all if it turned out a number of teams were engaged in sign stealing via prohibited means.  I really got the impression that MLB didn't want to ask questions they knew they, or at least the public, wouldn't like the answers to.

using the same signals to call pitches that have been around for a century and then cry about someone tipping off your pitches is in the area of pathetic.  especially when the 3rd base coach is doing a combination of macarena, electric slide, the dougie, and the floss to tell a pitcher to bunt.

Stealing signs isn't too hard from second base. You can get them generally by the second pitch. It's relaying them back to the hitter without getting caught that's the hard part. Get caught doing that, and you'll be getting the first pitch in the ear the next time up.
Most of the time runners aren't on base long enough to make much of a difference with sign stealing. But if you see a runner either making a fist or extending one arm towards second, that's usually a tip off that they have your pitches.
Sometimes that gets picked up on the bench and some one will say " let's go" for a fastball, or "atta boy" for a breaking pitch.
Catchers will usually use a sign as an "indicator", and then they'll go either the next sign or two or three signs afterwards as the pitch. If the catcher sees you sneaking a peek he'll signal for a pickoff.

Hahaha wait, you're serious?

Once upon a time (20+ years ago) I played A-level baseball and regardless of the team I was on, we cheated. Every single game. But it's not cheating really, it's gaming the system. Who says you can't intercept the other team's signals? Because you absolutely can.
I love baseball because on the one hand it's a gentleman's game with a rich history. But under the surface it's the dirtiest game in the world. Everybody involved at a level higher than little league knows, and likely participates, in these kinds of actions in every single game.

I kinda like the idea of a sport where espionage is as much of a factor as physical skill.

I mean, part of the reason I like baseball is because it's a thinking man's game. I say, make it even moreso. Allow teams to send signals electronically. Have each team employ an encryption expert and hackers in addition to ballplayers.

All the fun of baseball and a Tom Clancy novel. Sounds kinda cool to me.

detonator: Get caught doing that, and you'll be getting the first pitch in the ear the next time up.

OK, hit me, especially if I'm expecting it. If I'm fast enough, I'll steal second base and steal signs again. Or I'll dodge all four of the pitches you try to hit me with and take the walk.

Seems like there should be a better way to get revenge. Sometimes baseball's conventions confuse me.

If they hit you you're expected to go out to the mound and brawl. If you don't, even your own teammates will call you soft. A lot of managers wouldn't play you if you didn't do that.
