(CNN)   The good news is that relief from California's current drought is on the way. The bad news is that it's in the form of an "atmospheric river" that will unleash "bomb cyclones" on the West Coast. Batten down the hatches, mateys   (cnn.com) divider line

Cue PG&E cutting power to save their own asses.

Thankfully all new homes in CA are all electric so you can't cook anything when the power is out.

we need to disentangle the marketing people from the weather people.

This is why a propane grill is useful.

Although you might need to strap everything down so it doesn't blow away if you're in a hurricane area.

And it's interesting cooking outside after freezing rain as you duck for cover every time you hear the popping sounds before a branch comes down

Cans of sterno can also heat things up if you're not quite so adventurous

Are people in California with the phrase "it never rains but it pours" ? Cos is kind of seems like a useful phrase.

Ah, mudslide season

Maybe the weather gods will ease up on us if we start rounding up prominent climate change denialists and chaining them up to boulders to be exposed to the elements as a human sacrifice.

I mean, it's worth trying.

Still not sure if this is worse or better than a dope cyclone. This new rating system is confusing.

Hey you guys, do you remember about three years ago, it snowed so much all the dams in California filled up, and everyone said, Yay, the drought is over! and then they went back to growing almonds and cantaloupes?

Don't they have solar panels and batteries installed at little or no upfront cost to them?

Internet Chick with a huge rack of solar panels said she got them for free.

Almonds are really a red herring.

The first thing to ban is lettuce. It has almost no nutritional value and costs a lot to transport and store because it needs to be kept cool and perishes quickly.

Something like 40 percent of agricultural water usage is related to livestock and specifically cows - and of course, methane from them also contributes to climate change. We're not going to solve this problem until we eat less meat.

Fires, drought, mudslides, etc... I'll still take California weather over winter in the Great Lakes region and Midwest.

Why?  We'll always have water, probably always have rain and prolly never wildfires, and never mudslides or sunken under rising oceans.

Plus our home prices are normal.

The Midwest is going to be prime real estate after the above things happen, which is why I am advocating for a wall around Ohio, keep the garbage out.

I can deal with the earthquakes, landslides, droughts and wildfires in return for livable weather 12 months a year and no snow.  One hundred percent worth it.

The only place worth living in the Midwest is having climate change issues of its own.

Why? The weather is awful there. Negative temps in the winter and hot humid summers. Plus it's flat. I'm not knocking it but it's no shock why people in CA wouldn't wanna live that life, we can handle the negatives of living here because it's still pretty damn worth it.

No. I don't recall the drought being declared over, nor do I remember them ever stopping almond production. They've expanded their acreage almost every year before and since then, too.

So while it's unfortunate I don't remember that thing that never happened, you still got to sneer at farmers, so you have that going for you.

If I didn't have access to a non-electric stove, I would at least buy one of these dual fuel burners. The butane is convenient, but harder to come by in a pinch. Also, a can of butane doesn't last as long as a can of propane. I found this one online for $40. Plus, they are great cordless hotplates if you have a party with a buffet.

If you find yourself at a loss for how to cook without electricity you can make surprisingly good alcohol burning stove burners out of aluminum cans.

If you know how, you can make a dandy little stove with the contents of your recycling bin, a pair of utility scissors and a safety pin. Then, all you need is yellow HEET from the gas station, 90% rubbing alcohol from pharmacy, or marine stove fuel from the hardware.
If you learn how right now, while the power is still on and the internet works, then you'll always have the knowledge.
If you wait until the power is down you'll be kicking yourself for a fool, while hungry and cold.

You can get butane stoves which are safe to use indoors (with sufficient ventilation). Check your local Korean grocery store.
