"B-b-but demographics" was the cry I heard since at least 2000. And while we on the left have been sitting here thinking about how we're going to own a glorious future, the Republicans are winning in the present, and doing everything in their power to ensure that future never happens.

They may be delaying the inevitable, but they're doing a hell of a job at it - Delaying it decades at this rate.

It will be interesting (and scary) to see what they resort to if they get another stomping. They will continue to run red state shiatholes, but I have a feeling they are alienating a lot of people in purple/lean blue states and will fail in their endeavors.

I am guessing it leads to a splitting of states and a dramatic collapse of red state shiatholes.

If you've paid attention to voter turnout statistics over the last several decades, you saw this coming long ago. Apathy from the masses has allowed fascist wannabes to seize power in over thirty states.

But go ahead and blame Biden and whatever your perception of a "centrist" in Congress is. The fall of democracy has been happening in your own backyard, and the statistics show that no one gives a shiat.

If the republicans don't take over the House and Senate next year we will know for sure that our country is over.

The party in power losses seats in the midterms.  A couple of times a very small # of seats were gained, but that always followed major losses from the time before.  Basically no place to go but up.  We are not in that scenario right now.

Good luck trying to do that in Michigan. A few years ago, we passed a ballot initiative that created no-excused-needed mail-in voting (very helpful for Covid), same-day registration, more early voting, and a non-partisan committee drawing congressional districts. The GOP legislature tried to counter that by passing tighter laws restricting how an initiative can make it on the ballot. And now they're trying to get an initiative on the ballot that would help them with their new restrictions?

Yes, we should be worried about the back-handed tactics by Republicans. But we can also watch those tactics turn back and attack their creators. They already did it with "If Covid is real, then who cares? Only people in the blue states are dying."

They didn't lose seats this past election, they gained seats, and as much as I wish otherwise, there's no reason to believe the 2022 election won't play out as it usually does, with the party not in the White House gaining seats. That's how midterms usually go.

They're going to take back Congress in 2022. The only way they won't is if there is a huge groundswell of blue votes ... and with gerrymandering, even that's no guarantee.

People really need to start being realistic about the political landscape. National viewpoints among the public don't mean squat when it comes to what the House looks like.

That's the reality we have to deal with.

I think part of it stems from the left-of-center vision for the role of the federal government versus the state politics that we wish were significantly less important. Voting and campaigning habits maybe follow aspirational view rather than practical view. One remote theory anyway.

Seeing the democrats dither, I can't foresee them being able to expand their majority or even keep their 50+VP hold on the Senate. If they can't deliver something to the people, I don't see how they can get reelected.

And if they DO win, I expect states to claim they lost, election results to be lost or tainted, and it to get messy. We definitely haven't seen the bottom of the rabbit hole.

Using a referendum, for ballot initiatives in states that allow that, is desperation?

No, using executive orders to do an end run around the constitution is desperation.

Announcing that you're going to use the FBI to investigate parents yelling in school board meetings is desperation.

Telling everyone there's no problem at the border, while 100,000 to 200,000 cross every month, breaking all records, is desperation.

There's plenty of desperation going around, all on one side.  No wonder those desperate politicians want to damage election integrity.
