I don't think Elizabeth is specifically bad but big ups to Barbados. I also very much doubt Elizabeth lasts until the end of the year. it will be weird to see the beefeaters change their outfits to say RC rather than RE.
hopefully Charles just passes it on to William but he won't. I think Canada and Australia drop out at that point. having that philandering douche on the currency is a bridge too far.

If a region is removed from an empire, that's the opposite of what that means, subby. It would not set on more of the empire, it would in fact set on less.

It is a sufficient play on "the sun never sets." After all, the removal of the queen would mean it sets on it more. In addition, it pays on the verb "to sunset" meaning to retire.

The idea of "the sun never sets" means it is always sunny somewhere in the Empire.  If they lose Pitcairn Island, the sun will actually set on the Empire in the first time in forever.

I think it will take more than just Charles becoming king for that to happen. And evidently he might not call himself King Charles, to avoid the bad reputation of the other two monarchs who had that name.

But yeah, there's no way he's letting it pass directly to his son.

Yeah, I used to think NZ might last until after William, but I'm guessing we'll have that conversation about two weeks after London Bridge, referendum in the next election, GG -> President 2-3 years after that.

I'm not sure about Barbados, but in NZ a lot of the greatest generation considered themselves citizens of the British Empire first and Kiwi's second. Quite a few conservitive boomers still do. I used to joke that if Brexit caused the UK to become a Republic some would demand that the crown jewels be moved here.

The Queen is not concerned by commonwealth nations treading their own path. It's been a feature of the British commonwealth since before she took the throne (eg India, I'm not counting the US because that took a war to happen which did in fact piss off the poms).

Well done to Barbados for taking this step before Australia has managed it. Down here we're a bunch of hangers on to old apron strings and we can't bear to be seen as independent or ourselves because we lack the requisite confidence.

/campaigned and voted for a Republic back in 1999 but that issue has vanished from anyone's agenda because we suck

Barbadans have the advantage here that even if a few had considered themselves British Empire citizens first, the rest of said empire would mutter some racist shiat about wogs and say, "Where's that then?  Buncha unga bunga innit??"  Not a lot of incentive program there for some strange reason

Mate it's not about a song. It's a well known saying from the British colonial era when a third of the earth's land mass was coloured pink on English maps/globes because it was part of the empire. It covered enough land mass that it was always daylight somewhere in one of those countries. Hence the sun never sets.

Forget being a millenial, that dates back to the 1800's.

Fark yeah, Barbados does well at track and field events in the Commonwealth Games and nobody wants to lose that.

They still play cricket too and contribute to the West Indies cricket team. Those guys don't do so well since they lost a lot of athletes to US college track and field and basketball teams but wow were they amazing in the 1980's. My childhood was spent watching the West Indies team thrash us frequently on the cricket field. Joel "Big Bird" Garner and Malcolm Marshall were devastating bowlers while the long serving opening batting combination of Greenidge and Haynes were all from Barbados. Gary Sobers is one of the greatest cricket players of all time and is from Barbados.

Tourist dollars.

The royal family brings in more revenue than they cost the country in upkeep and the position is almost entirely ceremonial at this point; any power they have on paper exists solely at the discretion of parliament.

As a brit looking at the other countries, I suspect much of it is inertia. The Empire transitioned to the Commonwealth in 1949 and in that time every Commonwealth Country has been self-governing with little to no interference from the Crown.
Some countries have become Republics (like Barbados) and no longer have the Queen as a Head of State, but ultimately not much (if anything) has changed in their daily lives.
The Queen loans most of the powers as Head of State to the Prime Minister anyway; it'd be like the President loaning his powers to the Speaker of the House or Senate - freeing him up to do all the ceremonial duties like dedicating hospitals, speaking at universities, hosting visiting heads of state etc.
So in a real sense, the Prime Minister of a Commonwealth Country runs the country just as a President would - the Queen rarely involves herself with how a country is run.
And when she does, it can get very difficult, very quickly.
The Governor-General of Australia Dismissed the Australian Government, using Royal Powers

The Sovereign has enormous powers, that they almost never use, for good reason
Jefferson Davis was pardoned; the English Civil War saw a King put on trial and executed.
Many said it could not be done: the King was the Law, anointed by God, and could not be convicted by it.
If the Sovereign uses the powers she (or he) has, they risk a Constitutional Crisis that could lead to war.
