(Jalopnik)   At around $2.01, this is almost twice as expensive as the average price of gasoline in the region. Did I mention this price was per liter?   (jalopnik.com) divider line

Have you ever driven Route 1 through Big Sur?  One of the continent's most beautiful drives, yes, but hairpin twisty in a small car. Driving a gas tanker truck up it and back?  The cost is hazard pay.

Captive market, and all that. You know how Comcast jacks your rates up to whatever they like if there's no other competition? Same thing.

Good reason for the locals to switch to electric or plug-in hybrid cars.

Live in a bumblefark town, pay bumblefark prices. Don't like it? Move someplace else.

If you are stupid enough to go to the remote areas of CA without extra gas, you deserve to be ripped off.
Zero sympathy.

BTW, also zero sympathy for people whining about paying for the true cost of gasoline.  The shiathole states are full of idiots who don't have the first idea of what gasoline costs, because they are dumbf*cks about everything.

Shiatholes are filled by shiat.

Like the comment about how if this was an unreasonable price, someone would put up a gas station next door.

Right. Like Joe Gouger isn't on the city council and they won't bury you in paperwork, environmental impact and then deny you anyway.

The spot in question is also about 20 miles from the nearest grid power, which is also part of the expense (the little motel and coffee bar all run off a generator).  Though they do have a good sea breeze, so maybe wind?

This station has always had outrageous prices, they take pride in it.  Gas prices are the only outrageous thing.  Other prices are high but it is in the middle if nowhere on the PCH.  Beautiful drive.

Guys...  We're talking about one of the only gas stations for miles, in an area with fewer than 500 people, perched on the edge of a cliff, that is so remote it doesn't have power lines.  The business has to be able to pay not just for gasoline trucks, but shipments of propane, and if the cisterns don't catch enough, water as well.  It also has to be able to weather the loss of business when CA-1 is periodically closed due to landslides... I believe it's closed now, so the only way in for trucks is from the south.

Remember, this is what the road looks like (there's only one road there).

I'd be amazed if they're even breaking even on gasoline.

Besides... it'd be worth gas at $10/gallon to drive Big Sur
