I haven't seen The Witches but the list, we a couple of exceptions, looks pretty good.

Maybe because I haven't watched this since it was new, I think Beetlejuice would be a good one for the list. Are there any truly scary scenes in it that I don't remember?

If The Witches is too much for you, best stay away from Halloween related movies all together.

Everything Raoul Dahl wrote was creepy.  Everything.  Must've been his personality shining through.

I wouldn't go so far as to say everything, but his books tended to be quite dark, often with bad and/or bullying parents/adults and usually at least one nice child (Charlie, Luke, Matilda, etc.). Charlie's parents were one of the rare occasions where they were good, but just very poor, and they provided for him as best they could.

FWIW, "The Witches" is one of my favorite movies and Angelica Huston is excellent as the Grand High Witch.

That scene where they all take their faces off terrified me when I was a kid. Look at this! It's horrific:

I'm partial to the always brilliant Jane Horrocks as the nice witch. Otherwise I agree.

As for it being scary, it didn't scare me a bit. I can see how some people might get a bit frightened or freaked out by it. As far as scary children's films go it's got nothing on Return to Oz. There's some nightmare fuel for the kiddies.

My daughters have been watching it since they were 6 and 8, and it hasn't affected them.

I'd write more, but I have to take them to their Coven Scouts meeting.

It's a fun adventure vampire movie but not scary or horror really.

I like him less than all the other characters in a Roald Dahl book and that's saying something because there are some truly awful characters in "Matilda".

Outside of that scene, and maybe the hand extending scene, that remake was dull as hell.

Before things get really gruesome and scary, I always kick off the first couple weeks of October with the lighter stuff.  You can't just start off with Zombi 2 or The Beyond...it's a science.  So here's what I recommend:

Murder by Death
The Comedy of Terrors
Student Bodies
The Raven
Pandemonium
The Man With Two Brains
The Devil and Max Devlin
Death Becomes Her
Saturday The 14th
The Cable Guy
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Class Reunion
The Midnight Hour
The Burbs
House of the Long Shadows
Dracula: Dead and Loving It
Ghostbusters
Army of Darkness
High Spirits
Mr. Boogedy & Bride of Boogedy
Bloodbath at the House of Death
Battlefield Baseball
Teen Wolf
Vampira
The Wrong Box

Maybe not scary, but the heavy child abduction and murder undertones are pretty dark and creepy.

Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and more recently ParaNorman are perennial favorites.

I was probably just 4 years old when I first saw ET, but for a small child, there is some some definitely scary stuff towards the end when the government finds out about the alien, and sends in a hazmat team led by a guy in a spacesuit.

The entire movie isn't scary, though, if that's what the author means.

LOL.  What a terrible, awesome movie.  Now I want some horsehead bookends.

Let me throw in some more suggestions:

Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Night Of The Creeps
Evil Dead 1/2/Army of Darkness
Monster House
and of course, Return To Horror High, just to watch Marcia Brady sensuously rub blood on her chest:

Fade To Black is a seriously underrated move.

We need a "what are your fave underrated horror movies" thread. Or did that happen & I missed it?

My absolute favorite. Truman Capote was brilliant.

On this list should go Private Eyes with Don Knotts and Tim Conway. Perfect Halloween movie.
