I'm waiting for the huge outcry when they change it again for sales.

Remember when they killed off Superman? That didn't last forever. They killed him off so they could bring him back not once, but in four different forms. Then he came back for reals later.

It's DC. I assume he'll just punch reality hard enough to create a third gender to reinvigorate sales.

I mean, superboy, not the mainline superman.

Tripling sales on that means going from one copy sold to three, basically. Probably why they decided to go "might as well" with it and go full Archie by making it entirely about his dating life in the first place, a lot less risk with a character no one cares about.

And in a couple months, the excitement and novelty will wear off, and sales will be right back in the toilet, requiring another stunt to boost sales, ad infinitum.

The soaring sales of 68k. Manga seems to be doing well, though. The US comics industry is...not good at what they purportedly do.

Remember Marvel crowing about the sales of 'Death of Captain America' back in the day? That was over sales in the hundreds of thousands...

Back then, the old Disney Comic Adventures digest that was found in grocery stores and school libraries had (estimated) sales in the millions.

'Kids don't read anymore' was a BS excuse used by the industry that was torched when Harry Potter came along.

'Girls don't read adventure stories' got torched by Hunger Games.

The EICs of the Big 2 will trot out every excuse under the sun to explain away low sales, except for the real reason...they mostly write crap event stories that tie into multiple titles and pander to a middle-age white male demigraphic.

Comics have cover prices of at LEAST $3 per 22-page issue. Kids can't afford to read. The ones who do are either being given the ones their dad or uncle are finished with, or they're the ones checking out graphic novel collections at libraries. Before you scoff at that, I'm told that manga and comic readership are both extremely high at most US libraries that bother to keep those collections.

Both Marvel and DC make efforts to reach out and make changes to appeal to new readers, but the same neckbeard brigade that got mad that Kelly Tran exists jumps down every time they do it, and moreover DC's editorial has an ongoing battle over anything half the management didn't see on "Superfriends" thirty years ago. Marvel has America Chavez and Ironheart and Kamala Khan, and every one of those characters gets mentioned by the boycott brigade as a sign Marvel isn't exclusively catering to their needs and is therefore wrong, even though those are exactly the point of view characters for the readership to reach people who don't remember the Ford Administration.

Marvel Unlimited is $70/year, which is an absolute steal, but that's also a AAA console game, so it's hard to say what kid is going to make even that choice, but at least nobody has to go in some dank-ass comic shop full of gatekeeping jerks these days.

The sales aren't high because of excitement and novelty.  They aren't high because it's a bold new direction to take.  They are high because people who know nothing about comics think that this is going to become a collectors item like the first appearance of Wolverine. And they think in a few years they will be able to sell the 20 copies they are buying and retire.  And the really funny part is most of them will just put the comics in a drawer or closet shelf. So even if it did skyrocket in value, theirs would still be worth almost nothing.

It can't happen between Oracle and Squirrel Girl, two different universes.*

But, a number of thoughts.

Interesting on how a lot of the DC women characters are in bathing suits and fishnets as opposed to Marvel.
(thinking of Wonder Woman vs Namorita, I know why the latter is wearing a swimsuit, but the former?)

Harley and Ivy has been couple since the '90's. (I kinda think that DC/WB is out to lunch not going with "Thelma and Louise" outing with those two instead of "Birds of Prey", but what do I know?)

They don't know what to do with Superman except kill him off at least once in any media, and conversely,
I'm wondering how long Jon's "dude in distress" will wind up "fridged ". Editorial will pat themselves on their backs when they pass that milestone.

And lastly,
I really don't care if they make secondary/tertiary characters gay especially for the usual gaining market share.
That's not being bold in my eyes at all.
In my mind, I already know who's gay/bisexual, and if they really wanted to be brave, they should pull the trigger.
If they really wanted to be brave (and the bold, ha, ha).

Speaking of Barbara, I was at a comic con (only been to a few. Not a super need, just a regular one) and I saw this red head with glasses who was wearing a bat symbol t-shirt and in a wheel chair (she had a broken leg or something.)
I say 'Hey Oracle!'. She says 'I'm not cosplaying.' I say 'You sure about that?' She looks down, realizes the bat symbol t-shirt and the wheel chair and laughs.

I'm sure it's been done... but it seems to me that if you have a bunch of A-list superheroes on your planet, what you have is a collection of people who have so much more in common with each other than anyone else it would be kind of strange if they didn't end up an isolated community that didn't date outsiders.

Before she became the most powerful character in the MCU and inspiration to little girls everywhere, Carol Danvers spent a decade and half dressed like a hooker in the comics.
