Fark!  Delta is already way more contagious than vanilla Covid

We're around 21 months into this pandemic and it just keeps getting worse... it's only a matter of time before a variant shows up that evades the Moderna/J&J/Pfizer vaccine, then we're really farked.

Halloween is actually a not a bad holiday for COVID.  It's basically all outdoors, most kids are wearing masks, anyway.

// Last year I got COVID at Christmas, because my wife spent 45 minutes unmasked at her parents house while dropping off gifts since we weren't coming on Christmas day in order to stay distanced.

Having a strain that is somewhat impervious to monoclonal antibodies while certain outspoken antivaccine advocates are claiming (without evidence) that natural immunity gained via infection plus antibody treatment provides more robust protection than a vaccine is indeed a recipe for a very merry Christmas and an antivaxxer-free New Year?

Good news would be that it's really unlikely, at this point, that a variant will emerge with greater lethality or severity than Delta, as anything that incapacitates people faster than Delta won't be able to compete in terms of transmission. Might be something more transmissible, but typically that change will also favor reduced severity.
Also, there's a good deal of research coming out that says the real problem with COVID is our immune system's hyper-reaction to a novel infection, and that it really will be nothing more than a bad cold once it's been around for 5-10 years.

The dream is something a vaccinated person is easily infected with, and can carry without harm while infectious for a couple of weeks - but when it finds an unvaccinated host it gives them a week or two before killing them.

Imagine the increase in literacy and IQ that would cause in the demographics.

I guess on the positive side it's geographically contained in the US.

I'm not the person you asked, but anyone who wants a booster in America can easily get one. I can't speak for people in other countries. The messaging around boosters in America is really poor. Basically, in addition to the old and sick, healthy people of any age who got Pfizer (and I guess Moderna and JJ now, though I'm not sure when) can get a booster if they check the box for occupational exposure. That's grocery, retail, health, whatever. They don't ask for pay stubs or any kind of verification.

The county place I went to for a booster was freakin' empty. Five stations of workers with buckets of Pfizer shots. Big sign outside that said "Free covid shots." No one gives a shiat.

There isn't a shortage of shots anymore, so it isn't taking anything away from anyone. It's not like those shots I saw are going to be packed up and sent overseas--they were going to go in the trash.

If you want one, go get it.

Nah, Pfizer is already testing a Delta-specific booster. If a variant emerges that completely evades the current vaccine, it will almost certainly be a descendent of Delta.

Yeah, and I would think the American vaccine makers are all united against delta.

If you just walked into a CVS would they actually deny it to you? I'm guessing no. If need be, you could claim you're immunocompromised, diabetic, etc. and how would they prove you aren't, even assuming they cared?

I looked it up, and apparently there has been an Epsilon already. But it was outcompeted by Epsilon.

Apparently they only give them new names, and I'm not a doctor here, so just from memory, they're different in a manner in which your immune system doesn't recognise them from a vaccine or prior infection. Kinda like you get a new flu strain strain each yeah, that the old vaccine doesn't recognise, or doesn't work as well against.

Apparently our current shots are fine against Delta+
