The government is supposed to deficit spend when the economy needs help and borrowing is super cheap.

What's your gripe, subby? How would you have written the headline? What would you have emphasized?

The article spells out the facts in the first paragraph.

Maybe you want to skim headlines and pretend you've read the news. Maybe you just want to complain. Whatever.

Good luck with your attention deficit disorder.

Penny-pinching during a time of comically-low interest rates will work out particularly splendidly given that we're only facing *checks notes* combating the climate emergency and its commensurate extinction-level event.

'b.b.b.but the kids will have to pay it back!!' is a legendarily stupid argument when your failure to spend in the present is going to result in their astonishingly diminished futures... given that the economy is predicted to shrink by a few percent for hundreds of years (or longer) from all the devastation, big thanks to the sorts of imbeciles who know zippity-shiat about econ, and who actually run around comparing our nation's balance sheet to the likes of a family budget.

Reminds me of the old cold war joke about a race between an American and a Russian and the American won the race. The results were reported in the American media as "American wins first place! Russian comes in dead last." and in the Russian media as "Russian racer wins an honourable second place while American runner comes in second to last."

Ok, subs. Deficits matter again?

Two boys are tossing a football in a Chicago park when one of the boys is suddenly attacked by a crazed Rottweiler.
Thinking quickly, the other boy grabs a thick branch, shoves it under the dog's collar, twists it and breaks the dog's neck, saving his friend.
A reporter is standing by, sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. "Young Cub Fan Saves Friend from Vicious Animal" he starts writing in his notebook.
"But I'm not a Cub Fan," the little boy replies.
"Sorry but since we're in Chicago, I just assumed you were", says the reporter and starts writing again. "Sox Fan Rescues Friend from Crazed Animal," he writes in his notebook.
"But I'm not a Sox fan either", the little boy replies.
"Sorry but since we're in Chicago, I just assumed you were," says the reporter and starts writing again. "Bears Fan Rescues Friend from Horrific Attack," he writes in his notebook.
"I'm not a Bears Fan either," says the boy.
"Oh... I assumed everyone in Chicago was either for the Cubs, Sox or Bears. What team do you root for?" the reporter asked.
"I'm a Packers fan," the boy replies.
The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes: "Little Maniac from Wisconsin Kills Beloved Family Pet."

US budget deficit hits $2.77 trillion in 2021, 2nd highest

1. "Hits 2.77 Trillion" suggests it is rising, not dropping.  "Falls to" would be a more accurate description
2. "2nd Highest" again implies this is a increase, not a drop.

I mean, it's pretty clear what the issues with the headline are, not really sure what your complaint is, really.

a particular individual: What's your gripe, subby? How would you have written the headline? What would you have emphasized?

oh, and one more:

The fact that the size of the deficit (which carries a negative connotation) is even being highlighted suggests that a big deficit is bad.  As others have noted in this thread, that is not necessarily the case.  But it being big is taken as rote as being bad (when a Democrat is president). So it is really an interesting choice of wording to phrase it in a way that someone who does not read the article would think things are going in a negative direction.

Ah yes - because we know how people in general are known to read beyond the headlines.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize 50% of the population is stupider than they are.

Lately I find there are really two conclusions to draw from.

Certain people are garbage people with garbage thoughts and garbage behavior, and should be dismissed with the garbage and never considered again.

Secondly, were the villans if we set them on fire.

My Dad always told me "Republicans borrow and spend. Democrats tax and spend." Sinema has said she'll block any increase in the corp tax rates or any increase in IRS enforcement. She's breaking the system that has kept America solvent lo these many years. Dude chick advocates for flawed economic policy and needs to be locked in the penalty box with Manchin for a few weeks.

Yeah, take Covid out of the equation for both administration's, and I'll be interested. Until then, it's emergency spending by both. Maybe next year we can compare Biden with Trump's pre-Covid years, but until then, it's like comparing my family's spending 6 months ago when a car had major issues with the spending now when another car has major issues.

Until then, it's not news. And it's just as unfair to factor in Trump's 2020 spending with anything, even Biden's current budget, since everything has changed. Don't worry though, Biden will still have a far better presidency than Trump, even taking Covid out of the equation, so it's all still good, we have the same, intelligent, compassionate man in charge now.

Just last week I was saying that the media, which is supposed to be unbiased, was spinning things in an effort to make Biden look bad.  And here is a great example of that.

Yes, they clarify what they meant in the first paragraph.  But the headline itself - which in many cases is all people read - says that we are at a "2nd highest deficit" right now.  With no context showing that, in fact, that is an improvement.

It sucks that it's the AP doing this.  Because they are supposed to be among the most reliable.
