Does this include deere workers who go out to maintain deere equipment that isn't really broken but it's not going to work until you pay a little ransom?

Because shiat's going to get very real if there's no harvest.

Software licensing/agreements. Farmers can't repair their own equipment without exorbitant fees like "calibration" services.

Some hackers in Ukraine got around it, so of course the US wants to prosecute them

Guess which party supports Right to Repair.
Times up: all of them. It's non-partisan (but a smaller percent of Republicans support it, so not completely non-partisan)

They learned from companies like Microsoft,
Ya, you dont own that. Its mearly a license to use our software/ firmware. We own that.
So we hach and develope a free range, shareware operating system.
I bet that most of their upper level operating system it linux based, and firmware can be reflashed.

Comparing software that you buy you from Microsoft to a tractor is, well it's a lazy comparison at best.

Especially because the equivalent would be paying Microsoft thousands of dollars because you want to format and reinstall. But, thank you for the helpful comparison of 1s and 0s to real world hardware.

IBM is probably a better comparison, where you pay $50k/yr for a service contract so someone can come out and replace the little clock battery and make the fatal system error message go away.

It's funny that you say that, but I was just troubleshooting  a brake control module this week. Has bluetooth connectivity, and controls brakes on a semi trailer. Kinda a smart interface using CAN technology.
Yeah, I build more of that electronic technology then you can shake a stick at.

One other thing you should look at.
GM bought coordinate measuring machines.
To make those machines accurate required using a software based error correction map.
Those maps where locked out of editing due to "license agreements "
You owned the machine and the map, but you didnt own the rights to edit that map.
I know how this works.

Veloram: Its a general strike and boy is it disorganized

I don't think we have the support structure for a general strike in the United States.

Once it was pointed out to me it's hard not to see it. Got so many people living paycheck to paycheck with no just in case "OH shiat" emergency money on hand and so few people actually IN unions now to help people get organized.

By design of course, can't have people realizing that they drastically outnumber the rich assholes making everything worse, gotta keep them on the back foot.

I'd love to be proven wrong, things don't need to be this shiatty.

Every article I've seen hinted that this is the case.  This is going to be a pretty good year or two for every company in the farm equipment business that isn't Deere.  And their baked-in ransomware is going to help that along.  The union's not to blame for this, it's purely greedy, stupid, short-sighted decisions at Deere and it's pretty transparently the case.  And if management has any brain at all, they're going to cave, and hard, to the UAW on this.

Bicycles aren't.  Neither is mass transit.  Maybe we should build out that infrastructure more.
