A key barrier to a deal has emerged in recent days in the form of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), whose opposition to tax hikes on corporations and wealthy individuals - big revenue-raisers that were included in the Democrats' initial $3.5 trillion package - has forced party leaders to seek offsets elsewhere.

Who could've guessed that one of Biden's private campaign promises to millionaires turned out to be the last thing standing in the way of a deal? Curious!

I am just waiting for us to get to about Wednesday of next week when, after all this stuff is seemingly ironed out, the Manchin brigade announce their one last concession they need is that Pelosi pass
the infrastructure bill first.

"See? We've been negotiating in good faith. You never had to worry that this deal wasn't going to happen. Just give us this one act of trust and we can all go home happy."

And then we are back to square one.

Beyond this being a lie based on taking half a sentence Biden said out of context, part of the reason a deal looks to be in sight is that the Democratic leadership seems to have arm-twisted Sinema into accepting a massive increase in taxes on the super-wealthy:

Yeah, it was such an awful statement...about how the wealthy need to pay more, and how even they know that.

"I could take about $400 [billion] away, and it wouldn't change your standard of living one tiny little bit - not even an iota,"

[...]"The truth of the matter is, you all, you all know, you all know in your gut what has to be done. We can disagree in the margins but the truth of the matter is it's all within our wheelhouse and nobody has to be punished. No one's standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change. No ones standard of living would change. Nothing will fundamentally change.
When we have income inequality as large as we have in the United States today, it brews and ferments political discord and basic revolution. Not a joke. Not a joke ... It allows demagogues to step in and say the reason where we are is because of the 'other"

He was making a very basic point: the rich are so rich that we could tax the bejeezus out of them and the only difference it'd make to them is a number on a balance sheet. And that if the government does not act to address inequality, it will result in even greater class conflict and the rise of more Trump-like politicians. Which you might recognize as the same arguments that Sanders and Warren made. And all three were right!

She'll get a deal passed in the House but Manchin and Sinema are going to find some new reason to not back the revised plan. Odds are 50/50 that they'll even try to explain what they find objectionable.

It's time to remove Sinema and Manchin from all committees and give them the MTG treatment if they don't pass this legislation.

I'm on record that I don't think companies need taxed.  They are just going to spend piles of money on lawyers and lobbyists to make it un-taxed, or leave it overseas.  That helps nobody.

Tax the high earners, tax 50%+ capital gains as income.  The money gets taxed when people benefit.  And you eliminate piles of loopholes, and unnecessary lawyers and lobbyists.  Make them wait tables.

You know they used to pay taxes, right? They can do it again if we elect the right people.

Part of why they can "hide" money overseas is because of the tax laws that Republicans wrote decades ago.
