The "Stans" aren't known for their progressive beliefs, to be certain.

Can governments stop being authoritarian?

Can writers stop asking a question as a headline?

Yes?

What a stupid, very American question.

When the money goes where they want it to go, and how they want it to get there, governments will leave people alone.  This is why red politicians in red states are taking away voting rights from non-red voters.
It's actually happening.  Not sure why people are pretending it's not happening right this very second.

No like, I expected a hyperbolic treatise on libertarianism, not a discussion of the possibility of reform in central Asia.

I kept it together until this part:

"Uzbekistan even joined the United Nations's top human rights body this year."

Only conservatives can be authoritarian. Progressives would never use the power of government to compel people. 🙄

Well, yes. We've seen it happen in places without a full revolution. South Korea, Taiwan, The United States.

/not saying that there can't be backsliding...

Dems: do things to improve society or we'll find a way to enforce improvements!

Cons: you can't do that
Also Cons: dump all the plastic and oil into the oceans, finance illegal government operational interests by dumping drugs into minority neighborhoods and blame it on minorities and then take away their right to vote.  and women aren't people either.  9/11 America Patriot!

The only way to stop authoritarian governments from seizing control is to have a strong constitution that protects individual rights, election integrity, and the primacy of legislatures in governing, because these protect the voice of the people in their government.

Increasingly, in the U.S., our youth are being raised and taught to believe that, to the extent they even understand it, the constitution and the mechanisms for amending it are obstacles to better government. This is putting our freedoms in jeopardy, if enough people believe this.

It's a lie, and the people who tell this lie are seeking an authoritarian government that they control. Because they think they know what's best for everyone, and they want a central government to be vested with the power to make it happen, outside of a democratic process.

That's the exact sentence where I gave up on the article, too. The pain from my eyes rolling back that far was becoming unbearable.
