LOL! So farking true! That's a great representation of that flag.

They rose again?

Just like they said they would.

Huh. I was thinkn they'd be on concrete blocks all over rural America slowly sinking into septic fields.

Participation trophies.

Melt down the metal ones, turn the stone ones into paving gravel, keep one or two for museums.

not even 100?
truly the times they are a-changin'

We could leave them and simply add a marker for all those pro-monument history buffs out there.

If I had the money, I'd move them all to an island and aim them all in the same direction and bury them.  Then, future scientists would find them and think some islanders worshipped fancy dressed bearded guys on horses EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE NO HORSES ON THAT ISLAND!!!!  OMG!

Lifting this bit from Father Guido and the Big Boy statue debate of the 1980s.  I think in the middle 1980's Big Boy groped a waitress the day after we decided that was a bad thing.

Worked in a restaurant in the 70's.  Getting groped was part of the job.
Scene:  Me washing dishes.  Single mom waitress is at the pick up station.  Enters manager:
Manager:  Kathy!  We're getting complaints that the customers can see your underwear.
Karen:  Bullshiat!  My dress is below my knees!
M:  Mr. Basterd says you were bent over and he could clearly see your red panties!
Karen:  Lifts up her skirt.   He's a liar!  I'm wearing black panties (and she was)
M:  Yeah.  There weren't any complaints.  I just wanted to see your panties.  Laughs and walks away.

Nothing to do with Confederates statues.  Just like to tell that story every chance I get.

Some may object, but that text seems fairly objective and to the point. Let's acknowledge the history and heritage, and move on.

// Dad was from Louisville, family probably owned a slave or two, back in the day
// Mom was from Boston, distantly related to Robert Gould Shaw
// Slavery is, was, and will always be evil, and anyone who says otherwise is evil as well

Put in storage so when they rise again or something? Just melt the second place trophies down at this point and make snowflakes out of them to give to the butt hurt neo confederates.

The Confederate monuments were made into a giant Katamari Damacy ball, then shot into deep space.

First, for the folks who pulled these:

Second,
Statue of dead guy goes to the cemetery where he's buried. Just makes sense.  Display it where it belongs.
A selection of monuments go to museums:  Examples from shortly after the war, from the 19 teens, and from the civil rights era, contextualized to document what they were really memorializing.
The rest? I hear that there are ways you can use bronze that aren't racist, and the world can always use more gravel.

Also, I frickin Love Freakstorm's plan.  Let's bury all the equestrian statues on an island in Puget Sound facing south west, along with documentation of a plan to invade Austrailia.

The difference being that the Soviet coup was bloodless because it was unanimous. Well, except for the young KGB apparatchik who had to remain still during the shakedown

True mark of either blithering idiocy or barely-concealed right wing nuttery in people that believe removing a statue means erasing history.

What a thrilling read about where some shaped rocks are currently positioned, now that they are no longer displayed on public property.

I'm going to do an investigation on where the turd I dropped on Tuesday wound up in my town's sewer system.

That's not a bug, either.

I'm conflicted.
On the one hand, context matters, and these are slightly more than just "some shaped rocks".  Threats and intimidation don't cease to be threats and intimidation just because they're in statue form.
On the other hand, the comparison to Tuesday's turd is apt.  They should be flushed.

Although I kinda like the "confuse future archaeologists" idea.  Make a Loser Stonehenge. Put them in a circle facing out, and a broken plinth in the center with a poem to failure on it.  Something along the lines of Ozymandias but rewritten for applicability.

I hope they are preserving them for when trump is re-elected and he has them returned to there proper location. Although, trump would probably find a way to auction them off to make money for his "campaign".

This whole knocking over statues thing has its drawbacks.
-it doesn't really solve anything, too many people think it does
-it simplifies the Civil War to South=racist bad guys and North=moral anti-racist good guys.  Hardly the truth
-it can become a slippery slope, then any slightly flawed historical figure gets canceled by a bunch of completely flawed idiots.

I'd say the South=racist bad guys is pretty accurate. Don't see anything wrong with that, honestly. At best - AT BEST - there were boys fighting for the Confederacy because they were either conned into it or forced to(if Cold Mountain was at all accurate) even if they weren't about this whole preserving slavery thing. The fact the war could be boiled down to that simple split - people fighting to end slavery vs. people fighting to keep it is why it was just such a waste of life. The war was a culmination of decades of "compromises" of admitting slave states into the union, during a time when other western powers were starting to at least frown upon slavery if not banning it while the South wanted to continue living in Roman times.

Now it doesn't mean the North was all good guys, but then again, telling the truth about people who we think were heroes is considered "leftist woke cancel culture" so by conservatives' own ideals we must worship them all as heroes and not speak about horrible things they may have done in the course of the war.

That's fine, but pulling them down, while necessary, changes no ones mind about anything.  It just becomes a flash point for people to further entrench themselves into tribes, egged on by the media.  Would be better to just have them disappear while no one's aware of it.

I hate the way politics causes people to retreat to their corners. One friend who was a CNA and was actually ahead of the game about warning people here that COVID was going to be a serious problem at a time when most of us weren't too concerned, became an anti-vax pandemic-denying conspiracy nut when her conservative loyalty called her to that belief.

Almost as if the internal message is "I want to be a good, modern and intelligent person but I'm a conservative first and foremost."

Most of these participation trophies are not that old. Some are not half that old.

Although you are correct in saying that they've been on public display for far too long.

At Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland, community relations and preservation manager Chris Haugh decided not to wipe away the markings protesters had left on a statue of a Confederate soldier that was toppled, beheaded, and tagged with red spray paint. It marked the burial ground of 408 unknown Confederate soldiers who died on July 9, 1864, at the nearby Battle of Monocacy. The monument is history, he said, but so is the paint and other damage. "That's history, too."

I'm all for removing the random statues of Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis from random places in the south that they probably never visited and that serve no purpose other than to intimidate people.

But removing a grave marker from soldiers' graves???  That doesn't seem right.

Museum basements. That's my educated guess. After the revolutionaries knock their heads of their dictatorial tormenters, they bury the remaining rubble. Think of all the gods and kings, and this is their end. To have their noses broken off and to be recuperated by the British Museum in a few thousand years.

The Roman Catholic Church buries its dead saints also.

And the Jews collect every shred of paper with the Lord's Name on it and bury it in Genezahs.

It's not rocket science people. We don't have to dump our history into black holes or suns.

"Yet each man kills the thing he loves,
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!
Some kill their love when they are young,
And some when they are old;
Some strangle with the hands of Lust,
Some with the hands of Gold:
The kindest use a knife, because
The dead so soon grow cold.
Some love too little, some too long,
Some sell, and others buy;
Some do the deed with many tears,
And some without a sigh:
For each man kills the thing he loves,
Yet each man does not die."

― Oscar Wilde

I bet you weren't expecting that, but look at the picture again.
