The continents with the bulk of their mass closest to the equator will be the majority of the initial surges.  Do you think they will travel south toward the super narrow point of their land masses?  Or do you think they will travel northward into the largest Artic/Subartic regions?

Siberia and Canada are huge (examples) areas with relatively low pop/density.

Maybe the super rich will make underwater cities great again, or make Mars humanity's home away from home... who know.

Zombie movies were always thinly veiled fears of middle class Americans about poor browns and foreigners

2021-10-22 7:41:47 AM
All these beefy Caucasians with guns. Get enough of them together, looking for the America they always believed they'd grow up in, and they glom together like overcooked rice, form integral, starchy little units. With their power tools, portable generators, weapons, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and personal computers, they are like beavers hyped up on crystal meth, manic engineers without a blueprint, chewing through the wilderness, building things and abandoning them, altering the flow of mighty rivers and then moving on because the place ain't what it used to be. The byproduct of the lifestyle is polluted rivers, greenhouse effect, spouse abuse, televangelists, and serial killers. But as long as you have that four-wheel-drive vehicle and can keep driving north, you can sustain it, keep moving just quickly enough to stay one step ahead of your own waste stream. In twenty years, ten million white people will converge on the north pole and park their bagos there. The low-grade waste heat of their thermodynamically intense lifestyle will turn the crystalline icescape pliable and treacherous. It will melt a hole through the polar icecap, and all that metal will sink to the bottom, sucking the biomass down with it.

The arms race itself (especially the naval arms race) wasn't a major contributing factor to the war.  It was Germany maneuvering itself into a diplomatic position where it had both France and Russia as enemies, and the turgid Austro-Hungarian empire as an ally.

Kaiser Wilhelm the Lesser painted himself into a corner, adopted the "solution" that involved invading a neutral country, and arrogantly backed Austria when it wanted to inflame tensions in the Balkans.

Germany's intricate timetable of mobilization and offensive, part of their "solution", was more of a problem than the army they built to fulfill that solution.

Well, if the fossil fuel people had told us what they knew, instead of covering up the problem, we could have at least tried to make the problem less bad. Or something. But it looks like unrestrained capitalism will be the death of humanity.

And while we're listing global crises, don't forget water shortages, insect extinction, and crop zone shifts. We may run out of food before we get to the other Old Testament stuff.

There is a metric ass-ton of money to be made with the Northwest Passage (above Canada) and the Northern Passage (above Russia) that will connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and cut huge amounts of time and miles off of shipping.

Yes, there is vast mineral and oil wealth under the Arctic Ocean, but the same wealth is in Greenland. It will be much easier to access than dealing with hundreds or thousands of feet of water. The west coast of Greenland is also the logical place for a NWP terminus that will earn billions.

This is why I think there is an excellent chance that the next war will be between The US and Canada, against Denmark and the EU (and possibly NATO, if a future Trump or other Republican presidency quits our part in NATO).

It will be a fun little war, with lots of bravery, medals, and heroes, and the boys on both sides will get to try out all their new toys (drones, automated tanks, etc.) The 65,000 "colonial oppressed" native Greenlanders will have the shiat liberated out of them.

Siberia and Canada are huge (examples) areas with relatively low pop/density.

There are many reasons for the lack of population in the Canadian North (and Siberia as well).  It is unlivable - no farmland, no infrastructure, brutally cold for 6-months. No roads for the other 6 months a year due to permafrost's annual summer melt.  The land has no carrying capacity at all.

And global warming isn't ever going to magically turn the muskeg/taiga of the far north into the rolling farmlands of Southern Ontario or Alberta....

We will never be able to 'put' refugees into these regions.

I would imagine that individuals will make choices that they believe are individualistic choices when in fact the trends will likely show that this is what will happen, ie, people moving further to poles, putting pressure on resources in those spaces.  So people might say "im not moving to wisconsin from florida because of climate change...its just that theres a job there that i happen to want..."  But in fact it will be because of forces well beyond individuals.

I suppose one of the other signs of all of this happening will be that places like Phoenix and Las Vegas will probably implode sooner than later.

Right.  These areas have NEVER had large populations.  There have never been wars over these spaces, and no resources.  I suppose these spaces will see attempts at development, but its not going to work in ways that have worked in the past.  I think thats the key with all of this...if we simply assume that we can continue with petroleum based systems it certainly wont work.
