DeSantis will never admit that liberals are smarter than him. He doesn't care how many Floridians die.

Vaccine mandates would bring tourists back to Florida where tourism is a major industry. The economic benefits of vaccine mandates would create jobs, jobs paying well enough to change some antivaxxers' minds about getting the jab and getting an okay job. It's pretty simple. Tourist dollars inject life into the economy, and most sensible tourists already get that cruise ships and resorts are giant petri dishes as it is which don't need coronavirus in the mix so as long as this shiat goes on they're steering clear of Florida.

DeSantis is not just a terrible human being, he's proof that the Republican Party is willing to flush business and the economy down the toilet in the name of freedumbs only idiots want. It's the lowest common denominator all the way with these clowns. No class at all.

He's already encouraged more people to commit suicide than comprised the margin of victory he won his election by -- has anyone checked his portfolio to see if he owns massive shares of IvankaCorps Ventilator Rentals, The Villages Like New Golf Cart Resales, and Amalgamated Plus-Size Coffins?

He wants his supporters to die.  OK with me, I guess.

So he's decided to go against Disney and the cruise lines, the biggest and most powerful companies in Florida. Good luck with that.

What do you mean "nonsensical"? It's perfectly reasonable that social media companies that also operate theme parks within the state would need exceptions. I mean, imagine trying to run a theme park when you couldn't ban people from your social media websites. The nightmare!

Dude the jobs aren't going anywhere.  The jobs are in fact opening up.  And in a few months, they will be taken by people who were smart enough to get @#$%ing vaccinated.  And then there won't be a problem at all.  You're just swapping who's employed and who isn't.  Currently, it's a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated in both.  Afterwards, it'll be vaccinated people employed, and unvaccinated people unemployed.  Sounds fine to me.

And of course unvaccinated people can just go work for small businesses, which aren't required to implement the mandate.  Why does DeSantis hate small businesses?

Republicans are post-reality now. Vaccinations are Satanic and DeSantis has chosen to make this his defining cause. That's all that matters. The reality that he's killing his supporters and strangling his state do not matter. The template Trump created is "angry man is fighting back!"

Well said. Anecdotally, Papa Bear told me last night that for the first time in memory he will not be anywhere near Islamorada this winter.

My father, as some of ye may remember from previous episodes, is as conservative a Tory as it is possible to be. All free markets, all the time. Strong national defense. No goddamned Labour. Fark all people with less ambition than he, along with anyone who might be tempted to tell him what to do. John Bull from cap to toe.

"Klez," he said to my surprise and immense relief, "There is simply no chance. Those people are coming unspooled." Pops made his first real money as a recording engineer and producer, back in the analog time. Unspooled, in his personal lexicon, is as bad as it gets, a deep, dark combination of unseemliness and stupidity of the kind that always ends badly. And he farking loves it in The Keys.

Of course, he and Wifey #5 are going to Havasu instead, so some victories and some losses over here. 🤦 But still.

Disney, Universal, airlines, and the cruise industry rely on packing people as close together as possible to maximize profits.  Unlike DeSantis and FL residents, they know they need vaccine mandates to survive.  They are not protected from lawsuits yet.
Imagine if smallpox got out into the public.  We would be solid blue in less than 6 months.

The problem with Republicans, like other cultists, is that failed past predictions do not factor into their future reasoning at all.

Yeah, anyone who thinks DeSantis cares about anything more than his donors is an idiot. He won't be shamed or see something as a better alternative. The makers of Regeneron, the share holders of Publix and Walmart-seriously Ron is acting in their interest. He's just fortunate enough that his base is stupid enough to be motivated by stigginit.

Hey!  Me too.  It's like when I saw Blair Witch Project and I was supposed to hope that the characters didn't die, but all the characters were annoying and stupid and I actively rooted for their demise and I eventually got my wish.

Don't overestimate costs of campaign, here. Disney made enough money on just Black Widow or Cruella, in the middle of a pandemic, to fully fund an opponent and ruin Desantis. The only reason they dont is the public backlash of Disney having their own, literal, state government.

Same here.  We've been wanting to go back to the Mouse of House for a few years now and had finally planned it for 2020 until you know what happened.  I haven't seen anything since that tells me that Florida gives two shiats about public safety.  To the contrary, they aren't just against it, they are against others taking the steps necessary to ensure it.  That's being actively harmful just to score political points so no, I'm not going to be a guinea pig in your stupid game.  I can spend my tourist dollars elsewhere.

I am just waiting for nature to get done culling the morons at this point. We tried to talk sense to them for a year and a half and it is time we just let nature take its course.

One caveat. Non vaxxed people are denied all care given for the disease. Break your leg fine we will help you, need a vent, get stuffed.

They aren't going to listen so we just need to accept they are going to die. Let's just try to minimize the number they take with them.

Same here and I live in NH!  What's sad is that Texas and Florida are just achingly beautiful in some spots.  Don't get me wrong, I love the four seasons, the mountains, the trees and the lakes of my home but there's something about the palm trees and wide open spaces of all that flat land down south that brings out a sense of awe I don't get at home.  Maybe it's just the novelty, I don't know.  I miss it and would like to go back again some day but not at the risk of life and limb.

Republicans are killing their golden goose to prop up the most artificial of tribal differences I think I have ever seen.  The creation of this anti-vax movement to stand in contrast with pro-vaccine people (which used to be damn near everyone) is more absurd than Swift's big-endian/little-endian false dichotomy.

FTFA: "whether now is the time for Florida to withdraw from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and establish our own state program"

Yes. Because that's what the people who work and do business with Florida want: a Florida-managed work safety program. Your safety-gator will be assigned to you. Air conditioning will not be required any longer. Your shift will only be dismissed at the onset of category 4 winds or greater.

I used to live in Wyoming so I understand the problem with the worst people living on the most beautiful land.

I'm not sure it's artificial though. Someone said yesterday that Trump could've come out pro-mask in the first place and they'd all be wearing them (or pro-vaccine), but I don't think that's true. I think there's a combination of revulsion over masks (since they're not a traditional White American garment and to conservatives have associations with sickness, Asians, and Muslims) fear of needles, obsession with bodily purity, hostility toward science, fear of displaying weakness or fear, and above all else, the conservative sense of entitlement and lack of sense of responsibility.

To a conservative, no discomfort or inconvenience is small enough that they can be bothered to endure it if it's for the sake of other people. They only have rights, not responsibilities.

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.  Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape- descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

For some reason I've been getting contacted by recruiters in AZ on a regular basis for years. Every time I send them a short list of politician's names that are elected in that state, district, city, and something to the effect of "I'd rather not live in a community that selects this as it's leadership."
