Think of what the GOP has done with state level super majorities and then imagine what they will do with no filibuster. And no, that doesn't mean they will automatically kill it themselves. They have never killed it even though they could have under Bush and Trump.

Since there's no Rule of Law and our government is run via Calvinball, anything that takes the reins of power away from Mitch Farking O'Connell is justified.

Gee you mean to tell me he wasn't able to work with the republicans?

Hand-wringing apologist. You are the reason that liberals lose constantly. While the Republicans have not killed it when they had opportunity, the reason it wasn't killed is that they didn't have need. Since old Newt Giengrich, the Republicans have figured out how to weaponize their platform and to get everyone in line. The old saying is, Democrats fall in love with their party's president. Republicans fall in line with their party's president. Mitch uses every tactic available to win. Why wouldn't he nuke the filibuster?

You do realize that even without the filibuster, there's still the Presidential veto to consider, right?

/I'd also support modifying the filibuster to require someone who wants to block a bill to stand their ass up and read from the phone book for hours at a time. No more of this shiat where a staffer sends an email saying 'Yeah, we're filibustering', and then bam, 60 votes are needed.

Biden also ran on eliminating student debt and raising the minimum wage. He's reneged on both of those.

I have zero faith in him (or any Democrat like him) actually following through on lofty words about change.

I would like to mention... if it wasn't Manchin, it would be Sinema, and if it wasn either of them it would be the next conservative democrat. The democratic party simply does have unity or discipline, and refuses to punish obstructionism, so it constantly halfasses policy goals.

The Republicans have more discipline - notice none of them, not one, is breaking to support the reconciliation bill - but use it to accomplish evil.

2021-10-22 2:56:28 AM
the GOP is doing just fine steamrolling the dems with the filibuster (read: tool of white supremacy) in tact. the moment they'd actually need to eliminate it they'd do it without hesitation.

so GTFO with that pandora's box hypothetical

Ah yes, after months of letting Schumer play coat checker for the Senate that led to the current dilemma with Mansinema, Biden is now finally ready to flex his political muscle at the 11th hour right before everything falls apart.  Chances are, hes gonna turn around and put pressure on the progressives and frag all of us with a Build Back Barely While Getting Barebacked Bill.

Nuke. The. Filibuster.

I mean, shiat, traitor McConnell has openly said he plans to play chicken with the debt ceiling again in 3... no make that 2 1/2 months. As bad as Man-chin and Quirky are (and that's bad), they still support basic things like "the faith and credit of the government of the United States", unlike the GQP.

If the filibuster can't be ended for real, then by GOD it needs to be reformed so that they have to actually stand and talk. No other deliberative body in the world has this utterly farking stupid procedure, and none of them would tolerate it for a minute if it were somehow introduced.

It's really simple: If the US was meant to require 60 votes to pass anything, the Constitution would state 60 not 50*. We cannot allow ourselves to be petrified into inaction by the fear of what the fascists might do. That is handing the fascists the power. And by that logic, we must dismantle the entire government or the fascists might abuse it.

The worst thing that could happen to the fascist movement right now will be for the American people to see the first glimmer of what functional Democratic-led government that helps the American people looks like in years. But there is no way to see that as long as the GQP (the greatest threat the United States has ever faced) is able to obstruct everything.

*yes I know, it's majority not the number 50

What do you tell people immediately after an election where you took control of the senate and the presidency?

Tell everybody democracy is broken!!

(To be a Big Lie it's got to be ridiculous or counter intuitive like that.   That way peoples sub conscious follows a train of thought like this:    "That would be a dumb thing to lie about since the evidence supports the opposite.....so this must be true")

McConnell is the reason why we have the new insane version where you always need 60 votes.  He did that when the Republicans had control, not so that Republicans could filibuster when the Dems got control, but so that he could prevent defecting Republicans from giving the dems a compromise bill when Republicans were in charge.

He is probably scratching his head trying to figure out why the Democrats have not killed the rule yet.

I know, right? Biden has that badass magic Camaro that he could just do some donuts with on the floor of the Senate and everyone would cheer and unanimously vote for everything ever and we'd all get a pony!

But no, he's a selfish asshole that lets stupid shiat like being bound by Constitutional rules that don't allow him to govern by fiat. I guess we all better vote Republican.

Holy fark. Biden says he wants to do something that progs never said he would.

He is and now everyone is just saying yeah well the dems will just not do anything every just because.

Yeah we know the fark progressives seem to snipe the president are all getting erect with the failing of the dems, but hell they wanted trump to win to punish us all anyways.

Today I learned that Biden curses and when he does it apparently it is news and that even when Biden supports progressive ideals the progs will move right on to doom and gloom about how it is too late or how the dems just suck.

The fark progressive sounds like a 1980s Republican and my god this let's dig at the dems while the Republicans are over there getting out their hot dogs and marshmallows to cook on the ashes of government shiat is stupid. You don't need to help the Republicans destroy the country just because you like to say the word centrist.

At least you got to call someone a centrists tho.

News media. In no way or shape are you helping with the constant horse whipping of the dems in disarray stories.

Submitter with the unlikely tag? He said it, got proof it is unlikely or just being a shiatbag?

Remove the filibuster, eliminate gerrymandering, and bring the SC up to one judge per Courts of Appeals. (12)

Then remove foreign and corporate money from the political machine, and remove their ability to invest in specific stocks.  Any money has to go into a blind hedge.

And then I wake up, take a deep breath, and realize how farked we are...

So you're saying the onus is on Biden to eliminate the procedural rules from a chamber that he's not been a member of for 16 years, and of which Bernie has been during that time and has done nothing to change.

I'm going to need the crayons.

So please explain in detail how the president with their current executive power removes the filibuster from congress.

Please cite examples of how the president has any direct control of the congress other than just saying he wants it done.

There are viable things to critique people with.

Something they support getting done but do not have direct power to do is not that something.

Biden hasn't done the thing, stop acting like he's already accomplished something just by thinking about it. The reason we are skeptical is because the Democratic Party is "compromising" with itself to undercut its own bills that are supposed to help Americans, not even going through the Republicans to see if they can be convinced to sign off on a Democratic Party bill; but we can easily get 10 billion dollars more in a over 700 billion dollar per year military budget (the Build Back Better stimulus would only be 350 billion a year for 10 years, if it doesn't get cut down further or eliminated in favor of Manchin and Sinema and other Conservatives on the Democratic Party). When it comes to wealthy people, we help them right away, when it comes to everyone else, we have Manchin wanting to do a "strategic pause".

2021-10-22 6:36:48 AM

An openly fascist president finished his term with the American version of The Beer Hall Putsch, and a trial run of Mexican concentration camps. If the Democrats don't pass something major in the next 12 months, the chances that Trump, or a successor pushing his platform, will be elected are HIGH. Democracy is very likely over at that point, and what a hypothetical GOP majority would do at that point is moot, because Congress no longer holds any power at that point, it all goes to the dictator.

We're out of time. We need action to save the Republic.
