When you spend your whole childhood expecting to die in a nuclear apocalypse any day, you grow up to shrug and say, "sounds about right" to every dire prediction.

We don't care.

It's like they think we don't know. We know a lot of things and are unsurprised  and completely jaded by it.

Yep, I've been reading about it for 20+ years.

Sure, sure. The mythical "401K" beast that leads us all to the fabled land called "Retirement". Pull the other one.

Maybe if gen x had cared about something instead of feeling sorry for themselves they could've counteracted the boomers ruining things for all of us.

That's because the mass majority of it is total BS.  The "science" from Al Gores book is basically 20 years old and nearly all their predictions for today were way off the mark

401k is a scam. Your retirement savings shouldn't be subject to the whims of the Capitalism Mood Ring that is the stock market.

OOOOOOHHHH.  Subby has a 401K.  OOOOOOOH.

2021-10-22 12:37:35 AM
All jokes about Gen-X jadedness aside, we know the climate crisis poses a threat to more than our 401K.  A lot of us would love to do something about it for ourselves and the generations to come.  But if I could direct your attention to the age of Generation X (41 to 56 years old) and then to the average age of Representatives (58.4 years old) and Senators (64.3 years old)  and the President (78 years old) and the Vice-President (57 years old) you might see why we're still a bit skeptical that we have much say in the matter.

Also, it's adorable that you think I still have a 401K that hasn't been effectively reset to zero a few times in the last two decades.

2 decades and virtually nothing has changed.  Florida and Manhattan are not under water like predicted.  Because of warming oceans the US was supposed to be getting hit with 5 Cat5's per year by 2020.  How many this year?  How many last year?

Most active is very broad and extremely misleading.  2018 actually had a cat 5, 2019 had 4 cat 4's, 2020 had only 2 cat 4's and no Cat 5's, 2021 only had 2 cat 4's and no cat 5's

I mean ... don't live on the Atlantic Coast? Y'all have had, what, two generations worth of time to move away?

Hell, I was 8 when Andrew bowled over and even then I was smart enough not to set up camp where there was a high likelihood of being blown away.

I agree. Also, people in Tornado Alley should move. And all the people in states with frequent wildfires. And the people in states with nor'easters and blizzards. And all the people in cities and states that are prone to flooding. I'm not sure exactly where they need to move to in the US, but LET'S DO IT

Methadone Girls: My retirement plan is to work till I'm dead.  Soooo....  you're telling me I can retire a few years earlier?  Sweet.

My parents are in their 80s, they still work part time, they volunteer at the senior centre, and my mother had both knees replaced at 81 and 82 because the doctors reckon she'll use them at least 10-15 more years. I live in Europe, love my work, and truly do hope my parents genes pay off and I do work until I die, even though I could live comfortably on US SS and my OAP.

But I do worry a bit about everyone who isn't as lucky. The next 50 years could be a continuation of the comfortable whatever of our first 50 years, or it could get really rough for some people.

Not sure where you are getting your info, bit the overall number of hurricanes and the number of major hurricanes increased from 2018/2019 to 2020.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_hurricane_season#2020s

2020 is higher than any year in the 2010s for both stats.

Hurricane activity is definitely increasing.

Inflation caused by runaway spending is a huge threat to your 401(k).

Lectures about the climate are just propaganda related to new rules they are proposing for 401(k) investments. The threat there is what they will do to you, not the climate.
