I was in grad school 15 years ago with a young woman who worked for Spanx (I guess I was young then too).  She adored Sarah Blakely.  Every other sentence would start with "Sarah said".  I guess she's right though.

Spanx strikes me as one of those inventions/business where you don't need some fantastical futuristic idea to be profitable.  You just recognize a thing that will always be true like "women want to look attractive" and figure out a product or service to fulfill that need.

Blakely often recounts her bold marketing tactics during the company's early days, including modeling her own undergarments in pitch meetings to convince retailers to carry the products.

Yeah, I imagine with her looks she had their rapt attention:

I've met her.

She's quite an individual, but she still has a little bit of the Blonde Ditz about her. A couple of years ago, she had her car stolen out of the company lot. She'd left the key fob in the cupholder. TMK, it was never recovered.

Oh, and her husband is a co-founder and majority owner of NetJets.

She'll never hurt for money.

She invented a product that helped make chubby women look relatively fit.

I'm surprised she made so little in America

I dunno, that's an industry with tight margins...
