(CNN)   King Manchin wants to add a work requirement to the child tax credit, presumably because there are still lots of really narrow niches, crevasses, and holes in mine shafts that only their small bodies can fit into   (cnn.com) divider line
More: Followup, Taxation in the United States, enhanced credit, child tax credit, Child tax credit, Joe Biden, nation's poorest families, senator's office, credit's earnings requirement

How about we tell Joe Manchin to suck it and that his brains or his vote can be on the bill?

2021-10-21 9:14:35 AM
This way he leaves open the opportunity for bad people to point out that only "those people" get any benefits. That makes it easier to campaign against something that otherwise everyone would like. In other words, Manchin is very bad at being a good person.

Indeed yes: if you're in the 1% you get a tax cut

Yep.

Fortunately we get a chance to address that situation next year.

Fortunately there are no poor families in West Virginia that could benefit.

FTA:
"Don't you think, if we're going to help the children, that the people should make some effort?" he said in a September appearance on CNN's "State of the Union."

More accurately phrased:
"Don't you think, if the parents aren't helping the kids, we should collectively tell the kids to fark themselves?"

I would say Manchin is President, but clearly whoever is paying him off is actually President.

Probably not a good choice to write it into law as a temporary program then, huh?

I mean, it worked so well for VAWA and the AWB and the eviction moratorium and unemployment benefits during a pandemic...

And let's not forget that Congress just increased the "defense" budget by tens of billions of dollars while they're saying we can't spend that money helping real people.

2021-10-21 9:52:08 AM
It's just nickle and diming the debate until it grinds to a halt, this is a ridiculous level of minutia to be fighting over in a bill that is 1.5+ trillion dollars. A work requirement for a child tax credit what a stupid farking thing to be arguing over.

Say fark-it and focus everything on Fireside Chats by Biden on why he can't help America recover until he has the support of Congress.

I don't think you want to see a West Virginia Republican.

Great - so take stock of who's making an effort already (poor and middle-class), and who's not (billionaires), and make them pay accordingly.

No? We have to make the poor struggle more than they already do? Fark off.

Can't remember where I read it-- maybe Carl Hiaasen? Maybe Steven King?-- but more and more as I continue to read about this guy the phrase keeps coming to mind, "If brains was black powder, he couldn't blow his nose."

And if jut one R would break ranks and support the country over party, this would not be the case. Just one. This is still 100% the Rs fault. The solution is to vote them out. Dems already come in 3 flavors, conservative, middle and progressive. They represent the whole country. The Rs only come in conservative nazi flavor.

The R trolls that come here want to put the Rs back in power by saying to abandon the Dems and stay home. They also claim the deep red state of WV elected an actual D and not an R masquerading as a Dem. WV knows he is an R and is just stigginit to the Dems. That is why they voted for the POS.

Forcing the populace to work to get their tax-paid for benefits? Totes a Democratic policy.

2021-10-21 10:04:22 AM
So can we start expecting churches and religious organizations to do something similar? Basically cap the amount of money or property they own before it has to put to a non discriminatory use in the form of charity or betterment in a community? Telling families with kids to fend for themselves but letting Jesus Incorporated launder money with no taxes so jerks like Joel Osteen can get another private jet seems like an unbroken system.

This is why every f'ing election and race matters. If the Dems had a 53-47 majority, they could punt Mansion and Enema into orbit and make them useless to their check writers. Both of them were the best firewall investment to make sure that the Dems would have a 'majority' that will have no production and be the rallying cry for voters to shift back to the GOP in 2022, and then you get President Trump or Rick Scott or Ron DeSantis.

Yes. You missed this. He does not support Dem policies. WV knew he was an R when they elected him. They would never elect a true D. They and he just want to stigginit to the dems.

No. He would leave. That would give the Rs full control and all the committee chairs.

Alright, I'll give Avigdore that much. Manchin is supporting inaction in the face of climate change, corporate greed and malfeasance, and the only action he actually does is soundbites in "Something must be done". He isn't the only one.

2021-10-21 10:06:22 AM
What?  This is a stupid idea.  He wants a work requirement, to be sure that the unemployed can't graft on the lucrative $3,000 per kid tax credit?  You can't claim the credit unless you meet an income of $2,500, but so what?  Your tax is already $0 at that point.  In addition, the earned income tax credit dwarfs the child tax credit and you can make up to something like $56,000 a household and get that.

This is a stupid, do nothing idea that only serves to virtue signal that you want to be sure those welfare queens aren't getting rich off having lots of babies - which ISN'T ACTUALLY A THING BECAUSE CHILD TAX CREDITS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
