Parasite is a science fiction novel written by Mira Grant (the pseudonym of American author Seanan McGuire).

The book, in the tradition of fictional parasites, envisages a world where people's immune systems are maintained by genetically engineered tapeworms.[

There are way too many ethical issues with putting something like this in humans.  (Only the rich will have it, forming two castes, etc)

But if you could put it in kittens and puppies so they stay cute and small, I see a use for it.  Provided you didn't give it to them 'til after they were potty trained.

What happens to the birds that eat the ants? Do they get the same effect from the parasite?

I don't want eternal life, but freedom from age and disease along with perfect recovery from injury would be nice.

Let me be a healthy '20-something' for as long as I like and, you know, don't starve, have a fatal accident, or get murdered.  I want a chance to live for as long as I feel like living.

I see where you're going. Since the affected ants live long youthful lives being worshipped by other ants, the parasite could affect birds similarly. Since chickens eat ants, and Donald Trump loves himself some KFC, this might explain why some people worship him.

No they just poop out the eggs for other ants to find.

Hansel and Gretel was a lot earlier, same basic story of living the good life in order to be eaten up later. It's kind of a staple plot for a farmer-oriented culture, to instead envision the human as livestock.

For those of you that don't want eternal youth, my HS biology teacher gave a foolproof way to get rid of tapeworms.

For 30 days you eat 1 slice of toast, 1 lemon cookie and 1 glass of water for every meal.  After 30 days, you stop eating the lemon cookie.  Tapeworm sticks his head out of your mouth to ask where the cookie is and you grab it and yank.

To quote HG Wells when asked if he believed in reincarnation, "Once is enough for little HG."

What would you do in those quintillions of years after the heat death of the universe? Tithonus diminished to a cricket. That's your idea of pleasure, is it?

Three points:

1) If I'm still a discrete human, then by definition the heat death hasn't occurred.

2) TFA isn't about magical bullshiat immortality but youth and freedom from the ravages of time so entropy destroying the environment would still kill. As would being crushed in a car accident.

3) It isn't about reincarnation either so it will still just be once. Just a longer one.

Oh, and a 4)

What I'll do with the time I'll find out. I'm not looking forward to my death because I suspect I might get bored in the next year, so why would I look forward to death because I might be bored in a hundred?

Like I said, it is not magical bullshiat immortality so just killing yourself when you're bored to death is still an option.

Simply create new consciousnesses from your own, creating a new universe of beings to experience.  Sounds familiar.
