This has to be hard for the Merry Brexiteers.  The entire point of Brexit was to stop the EU from sending the untermenschen Poles to sully the Anglo-Saxonate purity of England.  But if the Poles are no longer in the EU, then what do Brexit?  And if Poland leaves, doesn't that mean Engerland are now allies with the Polish unthings by the transitive property?  Nigel's head must be about to go assplodey.

Also, Poland must be really desperate to be dissolved by Russia again.  But I guess the battered spouse always runs back to Punch Daddy in the end.

I don't think the Brexiters cared about who was in the country as much as the fact that they had to pay them and tolerate them as equals. Pexit must have them drooling.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is this basically the TL;DR:

PMPoland: We don't want to follow the EU guidelines we agreed to, especially now that you say we have to treat the LGBT community like people

EU:  But you have to, or you can't be part of our trade union

PMPoland: I'm going to file a lawsuit in my own country to assert that Poland doesn't have to follow EU rules <wins lawsuit>

EU: OK, but if you start that crap, you can't be in our trade union

PMPoland: STOP THREATENING ME!!!

EU - "OK we'll reduce how much free money we give you"

Poland - "THIS IS BLACKMAIL!!!"

Q. How do you sink a polish battleship?
A. Put it in water.

Q: How did the Germans conquer Poland so fast?
A: They marched in backwards and the Polish thought they were leaving.

Q: What do you do if a Polak throws a pin at you?
A: Run like hell - he's still got a hand-grenade between his teeth.

Q: What do you do if a Polak throws a hand-grenade at you?

Pretty much that.

For the last couple of years current Polish government is building the case for "They made us do it" to get out of the EU.
Unfortunately the opposition is hopelessly fragmented so elections after elections they lose the vote against the current assholes. Even though there is more people who want to stay in the EU than those who biatch on it.

2021-10-19 1:57:50 PM

Herbie555: Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is this basically the TL;DR:

It's actually more serious than that. The Polish government has been sacking judges it doesn't like, and appointing judges that are friendly to the political party that makes up the current government.

The EU has objected to this, and also to a court ruling in Poland that says that Polish courts are the supreme law of Poland, and can overrule treaties that Poland has signed with the EU.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/10/13/polands-compromised-court-threatens-rule-law-europe

https://freedomhouse.org/report/analytical-brief/2018/hostile-takeover-how-law-and-justice-captured-polands-courts

Given that this is happening when Poland is also very happily accepting billions upon billions of money from the EU, many noses have been put out of joint.

phalamir: This has to be hard for the Merry Brexiteers.

One of the reasons I was (just) in favour of Brexit is that the EU doesn't have a good framework for dealing with countries that break the rules.

Poland is flagrantly breaking the rules now, but Greece broke the finance rules for years, Spain has prevented the Catalonia region from having self-determination, Italy is corrupt af, and Hungary has abandoned democracy.

If the EU is going to be a shiatshow, I'm pretty glad the UK is no longer subsidising it to the tune of $10billion a year.

/though the EU being bad doesn't make Boris less of a farkwit.

If Poland wants out, good riddance. It's not like they've done anything for the EU other than provide cheap labor.
The irony being, a big draw for Brexit for some was not having Poles coming in and undercutting local labor.

EU/POL relations are farked over the general idea of how "rule of law" should be applied, and whether or not the EU has any input whatsoever in how Poland governs itself.  This is particularly important because things like "free movement" become sort of meaningless if only some people are free to move into EU member states, but other people face outright legal discrimination in those places.  The EU is asserting that Poland is violating baseline EU laws.

One of the big sticking points has been regions in Poland trying to basically be "anti-LGBT" with reduced rights, etc.  The EU can't force the regions directly, but they can certainly start turning the economic screws, which is what they've said they'll do, and which is what Poland's PM is calling blackmail and extortion.

None of that was gone into within the article however you're probably not wrong on some of the concerns. Having said that how is it different than when Trump threatened blue states with withholding Federal funds if they didn't comply with his mandates? This is the EU version of a dispute  about state's rights. No less, no more.

TL;DR:  No, you!

None of that was gone into within the article however you're probably not wrong on some of the concerns. Having said t ...

Because when Trump was throwing that shiat around, he was mostly trying to get Democratic Senators and Representatives to go along with funding his Wall, and giving Trillions to Billionaires by threatening to punish their home states and constituents if they didn't.

Poland is trying to fundamentally limit individual's rights and legal protections, regardless of which EU member nation they may claim citizenship in. It would be like if the Governor of Wyoming decided that LGBTs can no longer marry, regardless of a Supreme Court case saying otherwise.

Banedon: Luse: Herbie555: Luse: Herbie555: Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is this basically the TL;DR:

PMPoland: We don't want to follow the EU guidelines we agreed to, especially now that you say we have to treat the LGBT community like people

EU:  But you have to, or you can't be part of our trade union

PMPoland: I'm going to file a lawsuit in my own country to assert that Poland doesn't have to follow EU rules <wins lawsuit>

EU: OK, but if you start that crap, you can't be in our trade union

PMPoland: STOP THREATENING ME!!!

You're wrong and so is everyone that smarted you. This has nothing to do with LGBT. It's closer to

Poland restructured their court (much like the US is talking about doing)
EU: We don't like the way you restructured your courts!
PMPoland: Shove it German lady, our courts our rules
EU: Then we'll withhold the Covid-19 relief package!

Essentially, she's playing Trumps move of threatening a member state with withholding relief packages if they ruled in a way he didn't like.

Be that as it may, it's the same tactic. The only difference is you agree with the reasoning behind one of them. If you're going to shiat on one side for using that tactic be even handed.

You also seem to be at least somewhat familiar with European history. You may then have an inkling why a German politician trying to strong arm the Polish legislature isn't going to be received well, right? At the end of the day, and your assertions aside, per the article we all read (HA!) this is merely about Polish court structure. None of your assumptions were stated by either party in TFA.
