(NYPost)   Five tons of cocaine worth $232 million seized by Portuguese authorities. All four tons were paraded in front of TV cameras, showing off one of the biggest three-ton drug busts in recent European memory, after which police moved all 2 tons to storage   (nypost.com) divider line

I never get tired of this headline formula. It's like Pam Poovey works for every cop department in the world.

After the 4th time seeing a headline like this, it reminds me of the 3rd time, which was similar to the 2nd and now it's like seeing it for the 1st time again.

Wasn't Portugal the model for drug decriminalization?

Who knew access to drugs wouldn't cut off demand for those drugs?

My take? Legalize everything and let people fark around and find out for themselves. We don't limit access to Krispy Kreme donuts or McDonald's and they kill far more people every year than cocaine or heroin do.

2 tons to police storage?  Maybe an ounce or two, subby, but that's pushing it.

Cop math actually seems low here unless that was already cut. Last I checked, a stepped-on gram was 50$ in the states. Maybe Portugal is a lot different economically but... I dunno man, 232 million seems about half price.

Pfffffft, only five tons? That won't last a whole weekend.

No one thinks that making a drug legal or illegal eliminates the problems. It's how the are managed.  Compare Portugal to the USA and there is a big difference.
Right now we have no universal addiction therapy for opioid addicts, close to 100,000 are dying every year, and a good treatment regime is cheap and available (Suboxone with cognitive/behavioral therapy and job placement).
We use it as a political talking point and simply jail everyone and take their assets under civil asset forfeiture, IMHO unconstitutional under the 4th and 5th amendments.

I feel bad for the reporters there, they had to travel there and get set up to take still images of a farking boat that isn't moving.  That must suck, not even any cocaine to try.

Do people addicted to Krispy Kreme and McDonalds suck toes for their fix? Steal their parents life savings to support their habits?
My ex looks like shiat and twenty years older because of cocaine. As far as I know, she's living in her car, if she didn't sell it for her drug habit. I'd rather she be beautiful, plump and happy with diabetes.

If Mcdonald's and Krispy Kreme were illegal there would be a not insignificant number of people that would suck a dick for a donut and a McDouble.

Who says Portugal was where the drugs were intended to finally end up? Once you get them inside the EU....

Yes.

People also do the same gambling, yet, as far as I know, people spend their entire paycheck on lottery tickets and lose their life savings in Vegas every day of the year.

Yeah, people are idiots and do self-destructive things. That's kind of part and parcel to the human condition.

$232 million for 5 tons comes out to about $51 per gram.

My favorite statistic is that in an average year, more people in America die from falling off a horse than die from MDMA.

*I doubt more people ride horses than to MDMA...

Applies to anything over 33'

From that: "Sailboats that do not accommodate overnight use or are smaller than 30 feet (9.1 m) are not universally called yachts." I guess I shouldn't call my dad's 28 foot Cape Dory that could sleep 6 below decks with a gimbal stove and 150 gallons of fresh water tanks, a "yacht"?
