Yes,  because I'm sure the Taliban's number one objective was to run a stable, efficient country.

Harder to funnel all the money in to the oligarchy when there's no money to funnel.

CBS reported that Afghanistan was going to have major food shortages in a couple of months.
Things are going to get very bad there.

Yup.

The Taliban are thieves. But they discovered that without a working economy, there is nothing to steal.

Forget it, Jake. It's Afghanistan.

Give it a minute and China will swoop in with their Belt and Road initiative to create some infrastructure in exchange for taking some loans that will be impossible Afghanistan to repay.

So this time, the people of Afghanistan need to rise up and overthrow their oppressors. Being starved, desperate, and cornered will do a lot to fuel revolution.

They're in for a bad few decades. In the end, the country will either be conquered from outside (i.e. China), or the people will do away with the Taliban and find a path forward.

Oh - natural resources.  Good luck getting to them, or getting them out when the populace gets all shooty and explody.

This is why, after a revolution, you don't kill the bankers and accountants. They are the ones who have to help you hide your illicit funds, for a small fee of course.

It's just hard to tamp down religious fervor unless you can drown it in money and prestige. You know.  The Saudi way.

"They told us, 'We are not experts, you know what is better for the country, how we can survive under these challenges'," recalled one state bank official, who like others spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on record.

Yeah, I think the request was more along the lines of get back to work or else we will kill you and your entire family.

So they ordered the financial managers of the collapsed former government back to work, with an urgent directive: Do your jobs, because we can't.

It may not be enough.  When people are starving and desperate, they turn to crime.  Anything not locked down or heavily guarded is going to get stolen.  Afghan people will subdivide into even more tribal warlord groups to fight over what little there is.  Any Chinese in Afghanistan are going to have to stay in a green zone or be with guards at all times or else be subject to kidnapping and ransoming.  It also doesn't help that a large chunk of the technocrats who did know how to do things have already fled the country and the Taliban have forbidden any other remaining ones who happen to be women from helping out.  I can't see any of this turning out well.

Well I have an idea: you take your terrorist group full of caveman ideas and fark off. You guys obviously don't know how to run a country and the people don't want you there anymore.

I'm pretty sure their clothing adapted to the way that works for their environment. Kind ok like hotter climate cultures tend to eat spicier food than cold weather climate cultures. It can seen counterintuitive but there's usually a reason for it.

Maybe if they blasted a few mountains and sold any ore that turned up... at least that would be better than competing with the Mexican drug cartels for the fentanyl / heroin / opium market.

But-- but -- I was assured that Russia/China was providing them money and weapons and logistics and that's why they took over so quickly!

The Taliban are fully aware of the fact they have a problem, and knew they would beforehand. They have been actively working as best they can to manage it as best they can, which they acknowledge is not their strong suit. It's not just the US that faced problems in this transition, the Taliban knows it needs outside funding, always has.

There just hasn't ever been a good answer palatable to everyone involved.

Sounds like the Taliban is sending the bureaucrats back to work to fix the economy... or else.

They told him, "Do what you must," but warned, "God is watching you, and you will be accountable for what you do on Judgment Day'."

That's gonna go well for everyone involved.

They were counting on the Chinese to save them, not realizing that the Chinese insist on stability and something worth expropriating as collateral. Afghanistan has neither of these things.

Nice job, lads
