people seem not to understand math. if a vaccine is 95% effective that means that five people out of every 100 who receive it will get sick anyway. not sure why that is so hard to understand. also fark the news networks that hype the crap out of 'breakthrough' cases. you are not helping.
this is probably why lotteries are so popular.

Maryland has a vaccination rate of 65.4%, so that means that 34.6% of the maryland population are responsible for 60% of covid deaths, even if you assume that the distribution of vaccinated people was random (hint, it's not as uptake is higher amongst more vulnerable groups) that means this data shows at least a;

( 60% / 34.6%) / (40% / 65.4%) = 2.7857 times higher - this means that vaccination massively reduces your change of dying by over 64%

This is manipulation at it's finest - getting genuine vaccination data which shows it provides significant protection the convincing people that it shows the exact opposite.

I have to admit Tucker is impressive for how brazenly he lies, I guess he knows full well that his followers genuinely don't care that he tells them the truth.

Last week, I had someone tell me "it's not a vaccine because you can still catch COVID"

We get notices when one of our locations has a person with a positive COVID test, but they don't identify the person by name. I got a notice yesterday that her location has a positive test. No idea if it was her, yet.

This is one thing I've always wondered about though. Let's say the vaccine is 95% effective at preventing infection. Does that mean that 95 percent of people are good to go, and can walk through covid clouds all day, and the other 5% are just SOL for various reasons unique to their body chemistry? OR - does it mean everyone who gets the vaccine can walk through 100 COVID clouds and get sick five times?

I've read a ton of literature on vax effectiveness because my wife is in an immuno-compromised group. Blood cancers (which Powell had) and organ transplant patients are at the absolute bottom for effective vaccine response. Protecting people like Powell is a reason to get your farking vaccine and wear your farking mask, not an excuse not to. Assholes.

Stuff like this is why I have come to the sad realization that all is lost, it's just a matter of time. Anything we do just slows it down a bit, but let's face it, the American experiment is slowly dying.

Look at the posts, people citing science to explain things in a realistic way, like that actually works. It's just preaching to the choir. The people who need to be reached find it boring and do not understand many of the big words used, which causes them to mistrust science more. Meanwhile the fascists just have to pull B.S. talking points out of their butts to get 100% obedience and belief.

That is thing, people like Tucker Carlson and others on the right are like terrorists. All they need to do is snipe and be partially correct once to have success. Meanwhile those of us in reality have to be correct 100% of the time, with no variance, or the fascists will use that 0.0001% that was wrong to delegitimize the 99.9999% that was correct. This not only poisons those drinking the Kool-Aid, but it slowly chips away the trust of the masses in institutions that should be trusted, and destroys the "common truth" which allows free societies to operate and prosper.

When I was a young person, IIRC every good birth control method's effectiveness didn't exceed 95%. Yet people used and still use birth control, without any derp about a 5% failure rate being equivalent to a 100% failure rate, because that was obviously nonsense.

I'll defer to any expert who'll weigh in, but I don't think the 95% number says either of those things. It's an after-the-fact count. Of all the subjects in the study, some of them will have had more contact with spreaders, others will have had less. Some will be better with handwashing or mask-wearing than others. Some might be blessed with luckier immune systems, others not.

Yep. The design of the studies was to give one group of ppl the vaccine, and to give a second group a placebo.

Both groups then went about their business, and the researchers counted the number of ppl who got sick. ~95% of the total cases were in the placebo group.

It's one. An aunt (by marriage) is basically held captive by a dumbass rightwing uncle. Aunt Marilyn is cool and vaccinated. The world would be worse off if she died, but better off if she became a widow.

Hard agree with what you said.

I'm sure it's on purpose that the anus' explanation here is exactly opposite of reality. Vaccines are highly effective at stopping spread across a population but might not work as well for some people ... which is why stopping the spread through vaccine induced herd immunity protects everybody.

Of course now the morons insist that disease acquired immunity is preferable to vaccines, which is also false.

Cockroaches really don't thrive and invade without huge piles of organic garbage and rotting food that humans leave everywhere, as well as the shelter they construct.

The "cockroaches will outlive us all" tends to stem from their surprisingly high radiation resistance.

It's a lot more complicated than that and the way science explains efficacy makes this happen.   The rate actually shows how much more likely you are to get infected if you are unvaxxed. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccine_efficacy

The simplest way to think about it is to take 100/(100 - efficacy rate).  A 95% efficacy rate means the unvaxxed were 20 times more likely to be infected in the trial period.

( 60% / 34.6%) / (40% / 65.4%) = 2.7857 times higher - this means that vaccination massively reduces your change of dying by over 64%

I have to admit Tucker is impressive for how brazenly he lies, I guess he knows full well that his followers genuinely don't care that he tells them the truth.

The vaccine is actually more effective than that. It's Simpson's Paradox. The vaccinated tend to be older and at risk; the unvaccinated tend to be younger and less at risk. When you compare the two groups head to head, the vaccine looks worse than it is because of differences in the two groups.

In the Israel study that got everyone worried, the vaccine was 90+% effective in preventing severe illness in older people and 90+% effective in preventing severe illness in younger people. But overall, it was only about 66% effective, because when you throw everyone together, the vaxxed side has more old people and the unvaxxed side has more young people.

It's the same reason David Justice could have a higher batting average than Derek Jeter in 1995 and 1996 but Jeter had the higher average for the two years combined.

The idiot lost the election
"There was rampant ballot stuffing by Italian astronauts in the Chinese space station.  This I truly believe"

Ascendant cockroaches will look back at this time and say "This is where the meat bags began to decline.  What with their flexible exoskeleton and their "This I Truly Believe" delicious bullshiat."

I feel your pain. The most soul crushing part is at work when I hear college educated professionals who appear normal in every aspect on the surface, until they delve into politics, and start spewing utter nonsense. If a person wants to believe something, no matter how asinine, they will believe it and defend it with every ounce of soul in their being. If you even try to speak a modicum of truth, you will be defined by them and their ilk as the one being irrational.

The only time you even have an upper hand is when they are trying to indoctrinate you and you pull out a version of the "I truly believe" card, but they have to come to you initially and start the dialog. But sadly many on the left are trolled to easily to do this, as they bite and interject emotionally before ever being approached.
