I'm okay with this. Anyone elected in govt over 65. Make it so!

What is a senility test? A phrase Axios made up for their headline?

Headline: "GOP senator calls for senility test for aging leaders"
Text of article: "Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), a physician, told me during an "Axios on HBO" interview that he favors cognition tests for aging leaders"

Jim Inhofe was once found wandering around on the House side of the Capitol complex, unable to find his way back to his office. He was the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services committee at the time. He's 86 years old, won reelection in '20, and will be in office until 2027... or he dies.

Cassidy is a gastroenterologist, not an expert on aging or cognition tests.

Bravo, Subby! It's time for these old codgers to retire and let some fresh blood in! I want to see more Gen Xers in high positions in our government. We had our chance and with a few exceptions like Obama, we screwed up

McConnell ain't senile, he's just evil. Manchin ain't senile, he just don't give a shiat about anything except attention and lining his own pockets. Grassley might want to be concerned.

Noticeably F.A.T.: McConnell ain't senile, he's just evil. Manchin ain't senile, he just don't give a shiat about anything except attention and lining his own pockets. Grassley might want to be concerned.

They're all mid 70s and up, though. Not sure why Biden gets flak for being old when McConnell is the same age and somehow it's never an issue with him.

So the Trump-humping fart doctor is an expert on cognitive decline?

Okay.

Seeing as it's a Republican proposing this, it will probably end up exactly like Literacy Tests.

IOKIYAR.  The Fanta Menace will be Biden's current age if he manages to steal a second term, but I doubt you'll hear a peep about his senility from the GQP cabal.

Because of his speech impediment, GQP's think he's losing his mind. It's like they can't understand that people with disabilities are normal people who are of full mind and judgement, unlike their own party members who can fully speak and really should keep the stupid in their brain.

Can we also have a high school level civics test before a candidate can run for office? I'm looking at you Tuberville and Marjorie Horseface Greene.

I'd love to see it; unfortunately, we run up against Thornton v. Term Limits again, as always. It would have to be an amendment, not just a test, and it is unlikely to happen.

One's a Democrat.

"Ageism" aside, our elected leaders should be broadly representative of the population they are representing. At their ages, they are now representing less than 8% of the population. And the constituency's priorities they seem to think they're representing hasn't changed, in their minds, in 40 years.

Live, on air. It wouldn't technically be a disqualifier, but if someone doesn't pass it, it should really tank their campaigns.

Sorry I'm late. Is this a purity test?

2021-10-18 9:58:19 PM
Yes. Yes. Yes. Not just GOP. Everybody.

I'm sorry to be an asshole on this one, but it makes no sense that we seem to have decided that our government must be run by Sept- and Octogenarians, when we are having a real problem with their declining mental facilities in most other aspects of society. (See: confusion when driving, falling for obvious fraud, needing to have modern technology repeatedly explained, etc)

I realize this is a direct result of mostly boomers having on one hand the financial means to mount national campaigns, and on the other, the free time provided by retirement to reliably vote for the candidate that turns out as much like them (old and monied). However, things don't have to be this way.

As Americans, we really need to learn that if it's ok to have a minimum, then it's ok to have a maximum as well. In this case, age to serve.

Our doddering grandparents are in charge of mitigating climate change and nuclear policy. There are exceptions, but otherwise that should terrify you.

2021-10-18 9:58:28 PM
Screw that, just do term limits and a lot of our problems will be fixed.

The voters who keep electing them disagree.

Counterpoint: Obama would have easily won a third term in 2016.

Term limits only give more power and authority to lobbyists and those not limited to a set time.

Rather than limiting terms, limit funding. Reform the finance system and get the power out of the hands of money and lobbying.

Grassley is 88 and seeking reelection in 2022. He once left a Gorsuch SCOTUS confirmation hearing early to get to bed for 9 PM. He was the chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Fine. Throw in mandatory retirement ages for senators and supreme court justices (in Canada it's 75) and I'm sure a deal can be reached.

In my experience, the diminishment of the disabled is a reflection of the portion of society with which one interacts...so it's far from surprising that conservatives behave as such (except if you got some limbs blown off in war, in which case they'll loudly thank you for your service since they believe themselves to be good "patriots" while they happily gut funding for the VA).

As odd as this sounds, sometimes that backward attitude can favor the disabled individual: it makes it much easier to impress a moron with preconceived notions of your limitations. Suckers to the very end.

So, I recently relayed a question from my retina doctor to my cardiologist. (Specifically: whether I should get the Watchman implant to eliminate blood clotting risks.) The cardiologist told me it wasn't recommended for me, and then told me of the retina specialist: "tell him to keep his business above the chin."

Similarly: tell Cassidy to keep his business up the sphincter.

Not a bad idea, though isn't that what primaries are for? If you're too old to operate at a basic level, chances are you can't effectively run a multi-million dollar campaign.

They need an earnings limit.

Once they steal $5 million they gotta go.
