You know, I get the need to stop exalting people who did horrible things, but there IS a difference between Thomas Jefferson and Jefferson Davis. At least ol' Tom wrote the Declaration of Independence and was president. Davis was nothing but a traitor and had no redeeming legacy.

I think the moral of the Thomas Jefferson story is that propounding enlightenment values is easy, but living them--especially in the face of opposing social norms--is difficult.

2021-10-18 4:57:44 PM
I have said this a long time. Maybe the government shouldn't be in the statue business at all.

/Good.  fark slavers.

2021-10-18 5:01:19 PM
I know republicans are going to be upset.  Enslaving women so that they can rape them is just their normal MO.  Ask their hero matt gaetz and trump.

2021-10-18 5:02:56 PM
So, maybe we just don't build statues at all? That was there's no fighting or historical revisionism needed. Just don't build anything to exalt anyone.

Even MLK was a serial philanderer. Mother Teresa was a moralistic sadist. Ghandi was a massive, massive racist.

There are no good people, just various levels of bad.

Who? Sorry I've never been there so haven't been able to learn about him.

The only thing of which I'm absolutely certain, is that neither the statue's placement nor its removal, had the input of a single, solitary Indigenous person.

...so really, why the fark should I care?

Exactly.

But with that said there is a very big difference between making a statue about the good things they did and they bad things.

No one thinks the reason why the Jefferson statues exists is because of the slavery.

But yes. Just don't have government paid statues of people anymore.

And both of them owned slaves. And Jefferson raped his.

Neither of them deserve statues. We don't have to pick one.

2021-10-18 5:07:26 PM
Mixed feelings.

He did really awful things side by side with good ones.  This is versus a lot of the Confederates, who mostly only did awful things.

With people like Jefferson I'd keep the statue but put a plaque underneath it that alludes to both kinds of thing he did.  Also, we're not cavemen anymore.  Those walking tour audio things that exist so many places can be cued by a QR code on the plaque, and played right off a phone, with even more detail.

Statues don't matter except when I don't like them.

I don't see why anyone is surprised. I fully expect the frenzy for eliminating statues and positive references of anyone who did anything objectionable to become the newest ouroboros in this next year, with calls to remove Martin Luther King Jr.s name from streets and stop naming schools after gendered human beings.

It's only a matter of time before we can't obey the Constitution not because its outdated, but solely because it was written by white men.

yes!
leave the space empty to represent perfect people.

America does not need statues, period.

It certainly doesn't need statues of slave owners. No amount of good thoughts makes up for that.

Put up a statue of Sally Hemings if Jefferson means so much to you.

Cletii all over Facebook have been loudly proclaiming their desire to tear down MLK statues ever since the first Civil War participation trophy went down. That is most definitely nothing new.

2021-10-18 5:10:23 PM
Oh no! Now how will anyone know who he was?

/rolls eyes

Meh, as far as founding fathers go Jefferson wasn't the worst. That said, I think we worship and exalt the founders way, way, way too much. Like WAY.

They didn't create a free nation where the people have the power over the leaders. They created an oligarchy. They were specifically afraid of the power of democracy and the voice of the people, and intentionally built anti-democratic measures into our constitution in order to purposefully limit the power of the people. AND they excluded anyone who wasn't a white man from having a voice at all. That right there is pretty goddamned telling, and contradicts the rosy myths we're taught about America.

But even THAT wasn't good enough for them. They also went further and gave SLAVE OWNERS additional power over our government in proportion to the number of slaves they had. They wanted slave owners to control the fate of America. They pretty much did everything they could to make our country have the superficial veneer of democracy while crippling its power and largely handing control to slave owners and their descendants. Decisions our country suffers from to this day.

So... I don't worship them. They were merely humans, and they did some good and a whole lot of bad.

"Owned people and f*cking raped them" is a bit more specific than "anything objectionable."

What's next, you're gonna make an argument about how Cancel Culture is destroying "anything the woke left disagrees with"?

If you don't to have a statue of him that's fine, but if you want to teach American history you need to talk about Jefferson.

We need a new statue to represent Tommy.

This should be the inscription:

Conservatives were shiatting all over Thomas Jefferson (D-VA) more than a decade ago, citing him as proof that the Democrat Party was racist from the very beginning.  I'm sure those same conservatives will applaud this cancellation, thus remaining consistent.

Not to mention the rape parties. But MLK still has plenty about him worth admiring. Apparently historical figures are more complex than "all good" or "all evil". Except that Austrian guy; all evil there.

He was present and watched while another one of his buddied raped someone in front of him. I mean, choose your heroes wisely. I guess defending rape is a hill to die on, but it's not the one I would've chosen.

I agree that Kindergarten Cop was unforgiveable, but he did make some good movies too and he wasn't a half bad governor of California.

After hearing a reading of the newly adopted Declaration of Independence, New Yorkers "Destroy History" by toppling a statue of King George III. And that's why no one knows who won the American Revolution.
