"Amazon boss Bezos, 57, is one of the main backers of Altos Labs, which has raised £200million and just opened a new laboratory in Cambridge.

But Bezos, worth £150billion, is far from being the only one taking on the grim reaper.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 48, has invested more than £600million in a "longevity lab" called Calico.
And Paypal founder Peter Thiel, 54, has pledged £2million to the similarly-tasked SENS Research Foundation."

That £600 million figure has got to be a typo.

Billionaire: "If I give you hundreds of millions to make me live a thousand years, is it possible?"

Aging Scientist: "Uh, yeah. Sure... we can do that. Here's my bank routing number."

He's got like $120b... if he wants to own the technology he wants to own a bigger part of the company... Not hard to believe at all.

Fine with me.  Live 1,000 years, Bezos.  If there's an afterlife, you can't infect it for a very long time.

I have often wondered how careful one would be if they were immortal or had a 1000 year span guaranteed.

We take risks, wagering our remaining time against the benefit/enjoyment we get from the risky activity.  If we die as result it is tragic- we could have lived 50 years more!

But a 1000-year or immortal killed while base jumping at 30 would lose the potential of 970 years or more.  How tragic is that?  Can't even imagine that level of loss...

I suspect immortals would be stupefyingly boring and have absolutely zero enjoyment of their long span.

And don't even talk about how many descendants you would have who don't call on your birthday...

Ofcourse!  We might live an extra 30 seconds thanks to trickle down immortality.

So how long until we learn that this longevity tech requires you to behead all of the other immortals for it to work?

Been trying out those nicotinamide riboside suppliments. Taking hype and placedo effect and our starting physical condition into account, we have felt better since we began. Nighttime leg cramps are gone. Lost weight. Painful nerve spasms have disappeared. Sleeping better. Better stamina. Not going to name the manufacturer because I don't want to sound like I'm making any commercial endorsements. But the medical research is there and it is promising.

We don't have any delusions about this stuff actually extending our lifespans, but our overall quality of life seems to have improved slightly, and that's good enough for now.

Because the technology is so expensive to develop, it will be available only to the rich at first.
...
But scientists believe that once it is rolled out to the general population,

Hahahahahhahahah!! Ha! If it worked AT ALL, why would you want to give it EVERYONE? A planet full of multiplying immortals?

Omg, we would literally be a cancer on the Earth.

What will end up happening is some council will decide on who and how the NuHuman will live. Man-made Man, indeed!

/I think CS Lewis' Abolition of Man covers this pretty well

By the time this comes to pass you will most likely be unemployable. Anything you can be trained to do will probably be able to be done faster, cheaper, more accurately, and more safely by a robot or some specialized automation. Instead, you will be getting a BGI, and have hobbies or maybe research to keep you busy.

Sort of already in play.  Anyone who has done the Ancestry.com or other DNA family tree shiat, has sent their DNA profile to a huge database.

Soon, billionaires who need a new liver or kidneys or heart, will pay big bucks to have the database searched for a perfect match.

That poor matching soul will either disappear, or if they are already an organ donor, they will meet with an accident.  Their organs will be harvested and prolong the life of said billionaire.

This is the stopgap that is already available until the technology for cloned bodies or other eternity protocols are perfected.

I've got joint pain in my hands. A useful treatment that I've found is: slather on Aspercreme or generic, then slather on 10,000 mg CBD topical ointment. Then have your wife put some Nitrile gloves on you, and just let the hands incubate for an hour. Consecutive treatments are cumulative, and the anti-pain effect wears off slowly if you stop doing it.

I'm 50 and, while not rushing headlong into Death's arms, I'm not entirely sure how much I'll be swatting her away if she comes around any time soon.*

1000 years? fark that.

* hopefully, it'll be one of those things where she sneaks up behind me, puts her hands over my eyes and says, "Guess who!" and then just as I open my mouth to guess all I manage is something like "urghk!" and then fall down dead

Imagine every racist grandpa at thanksgiving.  Imagine every actual nazi.  Imagine every redneck ranting about the gays coming for his kids.

Yeah...immortality is only good if you have a body of someone between 25 and 40...maybe 50 because what's the point of living to 1000 when most of that time you have a body of an old person who can't do anything.

The other big issue they barely touched on is what the hell are you going to do with all the extra people.  Granted humans are exceedingly efficient at killing each other but still the Earth can barely had the population as it is now.  Not only will living to 1000 would mean an induvial would be on the Earth using resources longer one would imaged they solved my first point meaning people may be procreating more because you can space things out.  You know have 2 kids then 25 years later have another set

Obviously cause a population increase such that we HAVE to colonize the rest of the solar system... and then the Oort cloud... the local bubble, then the Orion arm, heck the whole Milky Way, local group... Virgo Supercluster... hey, how about the whole Laniakea supercluster?

We can mine stars and singularities for the raw materials to make Dyson SphereShips, and then...

Yep. More power to them.

PET responded with a flowering of entrepreneurism, often-weird art, overly complex and time-consuming etiquette, and annoying smugness. FARP, PET, and the BPS turbo-powered an endlessly renewed and increasingly decadent renaissance. It created harvests of obsessive genius and cultural revolution. It forged experimental brilliance in writers, artists, composers, poets, and playwrights. It brought forth philosophers, mystics, and business gurus. It nurtured professional, amateur, and sometimes eccentric scientists. It cultivated historians and encouraged explorers. It created the leisure for Graciousones to become theologians, magicians, professional gamers, and inventors. It nourished eldritch seekers and teachers of obscure minutiae and paranormal "facts" of interest to almost no one else. It created a social class that did nothing except sleep, eat, poop, and surf the GraciousNet. And it fostered in Graciousone society a maniacal, obsessive passion for spending absurd, insane, ridiculous, and ludicrous amounts of time, money, and attention on luxuries such as pets.

[i.gr-assets.com image 288x475]

I guess that depends on how you define adventurous. With an 80- to 90-year lifespan, I'm mostly too old to start a new career, so I'm staying put. With 1000 years, though, I wouldn't even think twice about switching. On top of that, being able to stay at a job for 50-100 years would give me lots of time to save up a cushion to move onto the next one.

2021-10-18 6:24:36 PM
What's really annoying is that, even though I've got a minimum of 10 years to retirement, I can tell they're already starting to transition parts of my job to younger people. I don't even want to retire; I like my job - or at least I did, until they started with this crap.
