"It's hard to think of it this way, but I think ultimately the assault on the Capitol will turn out to be a good thing for us because it revealed a part of this country that we needed to see. January 6, I believe, will turn out to be the opposite of that wonderful lyric of Leonard Cohen -- not the crack in everything that lets the light in, but the crack in the country that lets us see the darkness inside.  It's the monstrous part of who we are, but we'll never be able to deal with it unless we can gather ourselves together and shine a light into the darkness and put what's in there on the run."

5 years of Trump cultism has revealed this element in members of my family who seemed otherwise "normal" but would belt out an extremist view every so often.

Example, something like 15 years ago I was having a one on one conversation with my soft-spoken uncle on the way to the airport about cannabis legalization and he blurted out "I think all those dope addicts should be lined up and shot." It was shocking. I didn't even know how to respond to that. I just moved on. He is firmly a MAGA cultist and I can imagine were he younger he might've been at the Capitol on Jan 6th.

Is it really surprising that these seemingly "normal" fellow citizens would commit such violent crimes in support of a man like Donald Trump and the lies he has been pushing about the election he lost by seven million votes?

Nope. See:

I've had a similar realization during the Trump administration, that it was better in the long run, that Trump got elected over Hillary, because it would expose and hopefully force us to confront and excise a lot of the demons lurking just beneath the surface in our country.

That my have been optimistic, but we're at the point where we will either need to deal with the deplorable cancer or let it divide us.

We'll sooner balkanize first before be subject to authoritarian rule under Trump or Trump the Lesser

These communities are amazingly good at looking inward at themselves and creating communities that self-reinforce huge numbers of abhorrent beliefs. They sit around bridge tables and greasy spoon booths chiming in "you are right!" when someone complains about the immigrants and the blacks.  They are insular to the point where every "other" is an evil.  That's the way it is in rural Indiana and, based on what I have read, is the way it is in rural California and just about every rural area out there.

Anyone that has been described as "a perfect neighbor, devout churchgoer, attentive father, good guy" has been a complete shiatheel--at least during my lifetime.

And I suspect always.

If the only thing you can say about someone is canned bullshiat, then the guy was a monster that you didn't really know them that well.

The first people I suspect of malfeasance are the ones their neighbors describe as perfect neighbors.  As God-fearing churchgoers.

That 'darkness' has always been here, and it's always been visible. Think back to High School.  You knew them then.  The loud mouths, the bullies?  The complete assholes?

Still there, still here.

They're just getting louder.

For decades these fellow citizens of ours have been out there, but they weren't raising their hands and saying, in effect, here I am and this is what I believe.  They were of course voting that way, but we weren't hearing from them as a movement.  Some of them were racists and many opposed abortion and believed that gay people shouldn't have the same rights as the rest of us and that immigrants should "go back to where they came from."  But they didn't seem to be a critical mass of the population until Trump came along and gave voice to their prejudices and because he did that for them, they elected him in 2016.

No, they have always been there and they have always been loud.  They've been treated as the only authentic and real Americans by both the press and popular culture for decades.  For my entire life for sure.

Most of the bad shiat in America is overlooked because most Americans think "that's not stuff that happens here; that's the kind of stuff that happens in some authoritarian police state overseas!"

Articles like this encapsulate that sentiment of American Exceptionalism where people are still struggling to wrap their minds around the fact that things are absolutely not fine here.

shiatty people exposed as Nazis when they had to face a world where they weren't considered the apex of humanity. They were "nice" and "polite" and "normal" at home because they'd had a lifetime of getting what they wanted with no challenge. They were always toddlers waiting to go on a temper tantrum.

Also holy shiat "only one was a member of a violent militia"... like seriously subby can you back off on the fascist apologia?

Nice doesn't eliminate capacity for mean.

I'm nice until something has 1. Violated a boundary 2. Been asked to stop 3. Does not stop.

Once all three hurtles are clear I lean into my actual diagnosed by a doctor PTSD and acting lessons to inspire comprehension in my "self described" friend.

If something breaches all 3, it's a rapist or a trespasser.

The capital rioters probably have the psychological profiles of date rapists, Facebook probably knew from analyzing them, and advertisers bought bulk advertising to abusive people at scale.

Five years ago I thought trumpos were something we could afford to wait out -- that it was okay to let them say their words and move on, that you could have a trumpo as a member of your family, that violence against a trumpo was the same thing as violence against an American. Five years ago I thought that we, as a nation, were strong enough to afford kindness.

Five years is a long time.

Conservatives never saw a problem that they didn't want to preserve for all times.

Some ideas are meant to go extinct.

-infomation throttling [mail, internet, science]
-controlling the bodily functions of others

This dude needs to read some history.  What happened 1/6 is not the end.  Hitler had lots of these slight setbacks on his way to power.  Unless the media and the Democratic leaders start shouting this from the roof tops we are headed to fascism just like Germany was in last century

Matty what I love about you is you can consume both entertainment AND the news.

Average Americans consume far less news than you and far more entertainment or entertainment only.

Entertainment only is blind and prone to exploitation by adversaries. Entertainment only doesn't know how to research and does it anyway.

Most Americans are in fantasy land.

It's the monstrous part of who we are, but we'll never be able to deal with it unless we can gather ourselves together and shine a light into the darkness and put what's in there on the run.

I'm not in total agreement with the phrasing of the last part.

No, they're authoritarian and fascist and they will always keep going merrily
along, atrocity after atrocity, until their own shiat gets blown up and is on fire.

/singing kumbaya, and playing by the rules, wasting mercy on the merciless, will be proven useless.
//and why isn't that fat alcoholic farker isn't in front of Congress right now?
///because, "someone's singing Lord, kumbaya."
