(The Register)   Uncle Sam says ransomware 'earned' $590m in the first half of 2021 alone. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of extortion, at least that's a pretty good Return on Infection   (theregister.com) divider line

The outward rotation of a limb or organ. The outward divergent rotation of the upper poles of the vertical meridian of the cornea of each eye.

in case any of you were wondering.

So, we're factoring that into GDP now? Sweet!

Been running Linux desktop since 2007.

Still waiting for my ransomware infection.

Synology and QNAS both have been hit.  Get one of the infections that hit them, and you won't have to wait anymore.  Lots of malware now goes hunting for know_hosts files for a reason.

Ransomware wouldn't be a thing without BTC and the other digital 'currencies' that aren't reversible.

The blockchain is the getaway car that the thieves need to allow them to target essentially anyone.

Gosh you are dumb.

I'm not talking about money laundering (and you are so wrong about 99% being cash). I'm talking about the use of malware to target ANYONE. The existence of irreversible transactions through BTC and others is literally the getaway car. You can't extort random people around the world for cash. You need a way to move money that can't simply be reversed. Without BTC and the others creating virii and malware would still just be a thing that bored nerds did. Now it is big business.

Ransomware: the free market solution to massive systematic wealth/income inequality.

I with years of over-supply and under-consumption, eating the rich has never been easier!

Ah yes, stealing hundreds from the middle class to give to the Russian oligarchs that control the ransomware distributors in Russia. They almost never target companies and wealthy people who might 'deserve' it more. Instead it is the already weak who can't afford the best security and training.
