Many of them are in jail...  You can absolutely argue that it's not for long enough (and I'd agree with you), but jail isn't a medal.

There are a lot of countries where they'd be hanging by their necks with crows feasting on them.  Or suffering from a polonium related enema.  Maybe the Death Van shows up and carts them off, never to be seen again with the family getting a bill for the death van visit.

We seem to be a pretty nice country.  That's my takeaway from all this.

Worse, now that they have criminal records, likely have no jobs because of that record (and refusal to get vaccinated; let's throw that in while we mention it) they're going to have a lot of free time on their hands, and claiming they "Were there on Jan 6th and here's how we can do it better". We know what kind of asshats they are, they will absolutely try to ride that mark for clout, they already are if you saw them parade around that American flag that "was there on Jan 6th" to people cheering.

Now that they know what they did, and only got sent to jail for XX days, they'll be conditioned to fear it less, and expect the same amount of punishment for trying again. Except this time, they'll try harder not to fail.

They've only been emboldened, and they sure as hell are going to try again in 2024 when TFG runs again and loses. They will go apeshiat when/if that happens.

/Of course TFG could also possibly "win" either through legit or rigged means, it won't matter, in which case we're farked anyway

harleyquinnical: Honestly, how many of us did nazi that uprising coming?

I think a lot of people (including a lot of us here on Fark) knew *something* was coming.  I know I did.  The signs were plain to see once Trump started with the "rigged election" BS 6 months before the election even happened.

I knew violence was coming, but wasn't sure what form that violence would take.  I figured maybe some attacks on DNC offices, maybe some random shootings.

Until Trump's speech that morning, I didn't expect them to actually storm the Capitol building to disrupt the Electoral College certification itself.  I figured that was too far for even them to go.  I was wrong.  I figured there would be a large protest outside and maybe some fighting and violence, but I really didn't expect what actually happened.

And even beyond that, once it actually happened, I certainly did not expect all of the rioters to go home and sleep in their own beds that evening (all but the 5 that died anyway).  I expected mass arrests, and I am absolutely shocked that only 1 rioter was killed by police that day.  Considering the violence that was being unleashed against them, I cannot imagine how the Capitol police restrained themselves from opening fire.

Ain't that the truth!  This one time, my family went to Chichén Itzá, and because my grandfather says that his grandfather was from Mayan stock, we all thought it would be a hoot to take over the whole pyramid and declare the New Mayan Empire.  It was gonna be pretty cool because I would have been a royal prince and I could have had sex with pretty much anybody I wanted.  We used a bunch of trash cans to barricade ourselves in the restrooms, but that's as far as our insurrection got.  We should have barricaded ourselves in the concession stand because they had beer so our empire would have lasted at least through the evening.  But the Mexican National Park guys had guns and we didn't.

It was hard to take the story seriously while the website was trying so hard to tell me about Hollywood acresses who used to be strippers.

I don't need to read the shocking expose filled with vaguely provocative shots of actresses i barely know who may or may not have ever actually been strippers.

On Wednesday, Chutkan sentenced two cousins who breached the Capitol and took selfies while doing so to 45 days in jail.
Prosecutors had asked Chutkan to sentence each of the defendants - Robert Bauer of Kentucky, and Edward Hemenway of Virginia - to 30 days in prison.

As we've now found out:

1) the officers in charge of the Capitol Police received intelligence reports leading up to the coup attempt warning of such an attempt, and they buried the report
2) the officers who permitted the events at the Capitol on January 6th knew the organizations requesting permits were fronts for Stop the Steal and didn't alert any of the people running security the day of the event
3) the officers who were in the Capitol Police's command center on January 6th watched the whole attack unfold and refused to order reinforcements to arrive or any other deviation from the previously approved security plan

I can come up with only one conclusion from these events and the above findings: several Capitol Police officers, including senior people in charge of the force, wanted the people orchestrating the coup attempt to be successful.

All this is true, but leaves out that Senior leadership- who knew this was going to turn violent - didn't issue the Capitol police proper equipment to respond with. That's why no flash bangs, pepper ball guns, gas grenades, etc, etc weren't used until the troops finally responded - the leadership didn't want the police to win.
