Sorry, doc, but Americans need holidays.

Maybe next year/decade/lifeform that takes over the planet after we're gone.

It was within our capability back in 2020 to prevent a COVID surge. Capability doesn't mean jack shiat when half the country is pro-virus.

And with the apparent mortality rate, that would require a few million dead Americans.

Also just because you survive COVID doesn't mean you won't suffer severe health problems as a result of infection the rest of your life...

I was on a private island much of last week. Didn't really feel bad about the international legs at all. St Lucia Abad vaccine and test retirements on the way in, so not a plague rat aboard. The flight to Miami, on the other hand (and being in the Miami airport) was terrifying. Why don't airlines make vaccines mandatory for domestic flights too? I would love to be on a plane without a mask again.

Arkansas Gov. Hutchinson really just hits everything on this one doesn't he?

"federal and state mandates are counterproductive to increasing vaccination rates"

"Asked specifically about the success of Tyson Foods and Walmart's vaccine mandates in the state of Arkansas, the governor said it is "absolutely" proof mandates work."

"Hutchinson said, based on that predicament, the choice of whether to mandate should be left in the hands of employers."

The state government defends the rights of businesses to do whatever they see fit with their slaves employees. The government doesn't have any right to tell anyone what to do, even if it might be in everyone's best interests. It would be "counterproductive" if the government were to issue an order that conflicted with your master employer people might get confused.

In the future historians and other learned folks will hold people like Destantis and Abbot and other plague rats in total contempt and the historical record will show this going forward forever. Sure, it does fark all for us now but at least in 100 years people this despicable and terrible will suffer some consequence since they wont in this current shiatty timeline.

Seriously though

I've seen more than enough epidemiologists say we can end the pandemic if we all pull together to do so, and that this is PRECISELY why it hasn't ended yet and probably won't for a good long while. If Fauci's optimism is counting on the participation of the very same folks out there sharing "vaccines are basically the Holocaust" memes, the folks protesting hospitals they believe are killing covid patients because it couldn't possibly be the covid killing the covid patients, and the parents going on spittle flecked rants about masking being child abuse, then I say we are f*cked in half sideways and always have been.

At least he's consistent with a conservative philosophy instead of whatever the hell Abbott and DarthSantis are doing.  Obviously I disagree with him, though.

/Ohio just tried to ban all vaccine mandates (yes, all of them!) but there was too much bickering between the hardcore right-wingers and the even more hardcore right-wingers that the legislation ended up dying because they couldn't agree on how scumbaggy to be.  [Some wanted to allow just businesses do their thing but ban government mandates, some wanted to ban just covid mandates, some wanted to ban covid mandates from businesses AND governments, some wanted to ban all vaccines mandates, etc]   So... yay?

Hardly.  This is definitely not 100% the fault of the unvaccinated.

It's a deep systematic failing of the United States' government to respond to ANY domestic crisis, whether it be a natural disaster, a pandemic, a housing crisis, or cops shooting black people daily.

Hutchinson pointed out that employers must navigate a nuanced, on-the-ground reality of some employees wanting a vaccine mandated work environment to feel safe while others do not. Hutchinson said, based on that predicament, the choice of whether to mandate should be left in the hands of employers.

That's working great in FL and TX!

Hutchinson told NBC News he believes muddled messaging at the highest levels of government has "slowed down acceptance of the vaccine and increased resistance."

Say what?!? Who muddled what, now?

2021-10-18 1:18:39 PM
I really like Fauci, but he's wrong on this. Sure, on a technical basis what he's saying is true - there isn't anything we need to stop a COVID surge that we don't already have access - except the maturity among the population to actually do it.  Too many overgrown toddlers are still stomping their feet and saying "You're not my mom! You can't tell me what to do!" when it comes to vaccines.

Ron White seems applicable here:

"I had the right to remain silent....but I didn't have the ability!"

A few hundred years ago, you'd have killed anyone who you found deliberately spreading plague.

We invented medicine so that wouldn't be necessary, but the plague rats apparently pine for the days when they'd be murdered instead of vaccinated.  Given the level of stupid that requires, my first thought is we should indulge them not just for public health but also to improve the gene pool.

You can keep letting idiots die, or you can try to stop the disease from infecting the young.  We've consistently chosen to keep letting idiots die (mostly to placate the idiots who haven't died yet), so I'd guess one more stronger variant of Covid will do it.

Wasn't it Sweden that actually tried that approach at first, and it didn't work?

Last time I checked, they were middle of the road. It's been a while, so don't hold me to that. There actually were some precautions taken, just not mandated. That makes it hard to say exactly, but there were plenty of places that did WAY worse than Sweden.

They didn't know at the time that natural immunity doesn't last long enough.

Plenty of studies that natural immunity is long lasting:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jemimamcevoy/2021/06/14/evidence-piles-up-that-covid-immunity-may-be-long-lasting/

People would really have to go out and get infected deliberately to reach the necessary numbers.

Without a vaccine, the necessary numbers would be reached. Guaranteed.

The time travel paradox doesn't allow that, unless you can travel to alternate timelines. If we stick to this one timeline we're on, and you travelled back in time to kill Hitler, then history would not remember Hitler and you would never know that you needed to travel back in time to kill Hitler.

Besides, that dude from XKCD already went back and killed Hitler. 1945 was loud!

Eventually, yes.  After the complete collapse of our healthcare system, and a huge number of deaths, not only Covid but from others that couldn't get the healthcare they needed (heart attacks, car wrecks, cancer, etc. etc.)
