I'm just glad there are still some paying subscribers so the rest of us can continue getting new content for free.

Other than Mandalorian and Pixar movies there isn't much content I'm interested in.

I watch a lot of campy sci-fi & zombie movies, which Amazon always seems to have a lot of. They also have a better than decent library of Amazon Original movies and shows.

As far as shows I follow on there, Loudermilk, The Boys, The Expanse, and Fleabag all have multiple binge worthy seasons.

I've been using it since it launched, so I'm just used to it? It used to be a horrible mess, and for the longest time they didn't have a dedicated app. I think it's gotten much better since then.

Disney+ in the UK with the star content is pretty decent, usually a decent mix on it

Amazon Prime is horrible to browse through but has some decent stuff occasionally

2021-10-18 8:46:39 AM
I used Disney + to watch the entire Clone Wars (which I'd never watched before), Mandalorian, Bad Batch and a handful of random odds and ends.

HBO Max for newer movies, Doom Patrol, upcoming first run movies (Dune, Halloween)

Netflix for Sex Education and that's about it.

We got Hulu for free and very put old M*A*S*H on in the backgrounds sometimes.

I have had Netflix sine 2009 or so and have been becoming more disappointed with it every passing month for the past few years.  I have the streaming plus one DVD at a time option.  There is damn near nothing I am interested in watching in the streaming content.  I've learned anything that's in the Top 10 list of what people are watching "Today" or "This Week" is pure dreck.

The free streaming sites I used are becoming more problematic with Malware Bytes (it kills 99% of the connections), and I'll be damned if I turn that off.  The last, best show I freely streamed is Resident Alien (absolutely brilliant and well written.  I'm thinking of biting the bullet and paying for The Mouse and Paramount+ to binge on some shows.  After that --???

Oh and you're right about the apple TV plus interface.  By far the worst ui.  Embarrassing how bad it is.

The best thing I've bought was the Chromecast with Google TV included. It presents to you all your shows and movies from all your services in a single interface.

"Hey, I want to watch a western tonight ***quick search on Western*** well, there's 3:10 to Yuma on Prime and The Searchers on Netflix"

I have ESPN+ too (just because it's thrown in free with the Disney Bundle) but otherwise that's what I have... and I use Hulu more than everything else put together.  And tripled.

There's a few things I need to finish up on Netflix (CAOS final season, most recent 2 seasons of The Crown, maybe a couple others?) but otherwise, I need to cancel it.  There's just no need to roll out 800 million series and cancel 799 million of them after 1 season.  It's so ridiculous.  There's a lot of great stuff there but they're all cancelled.  So I stopped caring.  And that's the only reason to subscribe... they have a very slim ever-decreasing amount of outside content.  I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up like Apple+ in a few years where it's nothing but original content and nothing else.

/I've considered going back to dvds because despite 100 streaming services, there's still zillions of movies (and tv series) that are not available to stream ANYWHERE.  Which is ridiculous.

You don't have to subscribe to them all at once. Like we have Netflix/D+ and Prime that will never stop. In the last year we have signed up for HayU (Canadian reality show service) for a few months so my wife can watch housewives and Crave (Canada's HBO service) since our cable company offered a 4 month deep discount. We are going to cancel both shortly and maybe sign up for Apple Tv for a month or two so we can binge watch Ted Lasso and Morning Show. Then cancel those and maybe sign up for Paramount+ when Beavis and Butt-Head comes back. None of these services really lock you in and with the whole binge watch thing it is easy to just switch around.

I just googled that and it's $65 a month.  Assuming you can do the functionality you mentioned without paying... Is there a way to add googletv to the chromecast after the fact?  I just bought the chromecast about a year ago... it didn't have it (far as I know).

If not does the Roku google tv app accomplish the same thing?

/It's not one of those silly things like hulu or amazon prime where you subscribe THROUGH that service?  You can just link your existing ones?
//Also, how would you navigate though?  Chromecast does not have a remote... all you have is the google home app where you can pause or play

Paramount Plus is weird because their movie selection is like, all over the place, and it's very disorganized. Funny (?) side note: they have a Stepin Fetchit movie on there, but only one of the MCU movies that they (I assume) also have the rights to (Avengers)

Peacock is underrated, but at the same time it could be a lot better

Literally every piece of Marvel entertainment, up to and including "what if" on that service has been worth the cost of subscription.

Peacock's UI is identical to Hulu's. It's just their execution of it that lags. Plus the fact they don't offer any type of HDR/DolbyVision.

Are there any problems with cycling though subscriptions? Like, if I sign up for Disney+, cherry pick what I want to watch for a month then drop the subscription and switch to HBO Max for a month, then Hulu after that and ultimately come back to Disney+ 6 months later will there be any issue reactivating an account under the same email and payment info?

This seems like the way to go currently. Binge watch a few shows, move on to the next platform and binge watch their best stuff, then move on again. Eventually you'll be dropping in to catch new seasons/new shows only and won't need to worry about missing anything, except online/in person discussions on "last night's episode". Have the streaming platforms put anything in place to prevent that?

Yeah, that's kind of how it works.  It'll vary by service, but I don't know of any that make it difficult to cancel/resubscribe at this point.  Though that could certainly change.  I'd also expect single monthly rates to jump up in price at some point to try and prevent the frequent cancellations.  Basically, to get the lower rate, you'll have to commit to 6mo. to a year up front.

2021-10-18 2:04:08 PM
My thoughts: HBO Max won't stop until they dominate American streaming. Disney will stay huge worldwide. Amazon will find a niche in some markets like India. Netflix will merge with a movie studio to stay relevant.

2021-10-18 2:20:58 PM
I'm guessing Netflix has the largest library of them all, but you'd never know it by browsing there.

Well, sure. Four years from now, Disney+ will have a good chunk of Sony's cinematic content (including the Spider-man MCU movies) in addition to the Disney and Fox stuff. And they'll probably be the sole owner of Hulu by then as well.

The problem with Pluto is that I can't tolerate commercials more and more each year. Especially during election years though.

As long as you aren't someone who needs to see something the day it comes out that seems like the way to go. Or unless it is a service that is putting out new stuff all the time. I have kids so Disney+ is getting close to being like that for me.

Matter of fact, I imagine all the existing "networks" will find homes with various streaming services before long.
