"Cool." -- Manchin, counting thousand dollar bills.

You can't shame the shameless. Anyone who has lived in coal country knows that shiat is mined in lives and health destroyed and they do it anyways.

Manchin has his pockets in that and healthcare. Talk about doubly not giving a shiat about the people of West Virginia for the padding of one's own wallet.

QFT.  You can't shame the shameless, and you certainly can't shame Manchin over something he's proud of.

Jesus, Pete, the guy stood on the poopdeck of his 6-figure yacht and laughed at protesters in their little kayaks, not giving a tinker's fart about the optics.  You think he cares that coal kills people environmentally?  Joe Manchin Does. Not. Give. A. SHIAT, about the environment.  He doesn't even give a shiat that people are killed mining that stuff.

Christ, being a Democrat is like being trapped in an endless screening of Pollyanna.

The cost is lives, and more importantly to Republicans, money. Lots and lots of money. That payments for the debt incurred is already being garnished from our wages, $100 billion just last year in climate crisis-attributed weather events.

Yes but Manchin gave his coal company to his son. His family will be more than fine for generations with enough money to survive climate change. That's the important part.

I'm kinda surprised two moderate R senators haven't yet flipped to get their pork into the bill, at a lower cost than what Manchin and Synema are holding out for.  Rs most likely realize that some sort of Democratic bill will pass, even if the final details are in flux.  Cutting Manchin/Synema out to get a bill passed with two R votes, in exchange for getting $250B or so of spending targeted at your state into the bill, should be eminently doable.

Massive Alaskan highway/oil and Maine lumber/fisheries subsidiaries, maybe?

Going your 'own way' is political suicide until the Republican Party is out of power. The better option is to keep voting for Democrats wherever possible to weaken the influence of Republican agents like Manchin and Sinema, and push for progress outside the electoral process by organizing as much as possible. Protests, strikes, investigative journalism, pestering the fark out of Congresscritters...they're all ways in which we can work for change without putting all our eggs in the election basket.

Republicans won't do that because they aren't motivated by the good of their constituents, but by a drive to destroy civil society and kill or enslave everyone who isn't a white cishet Christian man.

Manchin, unlike Buttigieg or even Manchin's own well-heeled children (q.v. Heather Bresch above), is unlikely to live long enough to see the effects of climate change inconvenience him personally.

So what response Buttigieg expects beyond "Got mine, fark you"---with a homophobic slur thrown in, if Joe's feeling generous---is beyond me.

There was a bigass coal mine fire in August AND toxic foam was used on it AND there's barely any national news about the disaster.

Keep it all very quiet, or else Joe Manchin might have to answer hard questions about the future.

West Virginians overwhelmingly support the $3.5 trillion budget he's hellbent on obstructing. 81% approve, including 66% of conservatives.

If we don't transition to renewables, our national security will be at stake. Look at Texas, they depended on natural gas and one cold snap brought the state to its knees. If the houses affected had solar panels they would have been able to function, at least enough to keep people from freezing to death.

China is building out their renewables. When they don't rely on energy from other countries to keep the lights on, their geopolitical position will be strengthened greatly. Can the US afford to lose the renewable energy race?

It's insane that it's basically the entire goddamned party, from the actual president on down, against two assholes, neither of whom are really anyone of prominence (i.e., they are not party leadership) and somehow we just can't get past this.

Yep. This isn't about Manchin representing West Virginians, it's about Manchin supporting himself, Charles Koch and various other fossil fuel parasites.

Wait a minute...
Manchin owns a coal mine and isn't in favor of a bill that, aside for the one little bit that will bankrupt him, will employ thousands of Americans and benefit millions more in improved living conditions?

Why doesn't he just be a man, tell the American public the truth (that he was elected to serve his own best interests), and let the chips fall where they may?
Americans appreciate the honesty of a trustworthy politician and it will probably help him get re-elected!

I don't see why this doucheaholic can't just use his position to squeeze every last bit of money possible out of the federal government to transition his fossil fuel assets to green energy. He's richer than God already, no reason not to grift the country out of a little more cash and do something not 100% evil at the same time.

Because that's the farking grift and the news is happy to play along with this soap opera. This will go on like this as long as the rich POS that are elected are personally insulated from the affects of their legislation or sitting on their hands while people die.

It's probably best I'm on the other coast because I would be seething enough to do something undemocratic if my own legislators were doing shiat like this.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: The Senate is, by design, the great sphincter of our republic.

Our Senate is modeled after the Senate of the Roman Republic.

Like their Senate, our Senate exists as the means by which a small but extraordinarily privileged aristocracy ensures the government continues to enact policies that keep them rich and powerful, while preventing reformers from getting anything done on behalf of those who perform the labor and fight the wars that keep the aristocracy rich.

Like their Senate, our Senate would rather deliver the Republic to fascists than enact necessary and overdue reforms.
