"You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."

"Why, what did she tell you?"

"I don't know, I didn't listen."

I was looking for it the other day to remind myself of a particular line, and I don't appear to have a copy!

I ended up at book four and never picked up any of the later ones in the trilogy.  However while out in Portland OR in '86(?) I did snag this book and for any HGTG fan it's a great read especially if you started with the radio series like I did:

The movie edited out all the funny and clever bits, because they were too British for American audiences to understand, and slapped on a stupid hollywood ending halfway through the actual story.

Go watch the old BBC TV series.

Douglas Adams said in an interview that he decided the answer was going to be a number, not to biggish.  Anti-climactic I know.

Also, there's so much narration and internal dialog in the books, filming them faithfully isn't really feasible.

We had two TV adaptations of Dirk Gently in relatively quick succession. Why can't we get a modern BBC attempt at a full Hitchhiker's series?

Hell, Doctor Who would benefit from a hiatus. Shift those production resources over for a few years.

Doesn't trilogy mean three?

And a faithful adaptation wouldn't have been faithful to how Adams' did things with Hitchhiker's, anyway. Every time the story was adapted in one way or another, Adams wrote it differently. Radio shows, TV series, he always mixed things up rather than do a straight adaptation of his own story.

That's just how he liked to do it. He was constantly re-inventing his own story.
Adams himself wrote the film's screenplay, which was further worked on (based on his notes) by another writer after his death. Most of the new ideas in it came from him.

If the movie didn't accurately adapt the book, that was Adams' choice and was consistent with how he wrote other adaptations.

I had completely forgotten a sixth even existed. I never even bothered with it. By the sounds if it, I chose well.

It wasn't written by Adams, so yeah, there is no reason to even acknowledge it exists. As far as I'm concerned, it's official fan fiction, not an actual sixth entry in the series.

Yeah, I just had to look it up.  I'm pretty sure that's the exact attitude I had when it was announced, which is why I skipped right past it when it came out.

He was an absolute treasure. I love all 5 books of the Hitchhiker trilogy, but over time I came to enjoy the Dirk Gently books even more. He hated writing, but I'm grateful for all he shared.

"This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movement of small green pieces of paper, which was odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy."

The first 2 books were and are pretty fun, if you are a teenager. They don't make for great reading as an adult. The jokes are a little too juvenile and obvious.

The other books past the firs 2? Skip them all. It just gets worse and worse until you forget why you ever liked the first 2.

There was for sure some mockery here aimed at the then somewhat new trend of everything needing to be a trilogy.

HallsOfMandos: Even though the film did indeed (mostly) suck, Mos Def was fantastic as Ford Prefect.

I thought Sam Rockwell's Zaphod was an interesting take on the character.

But yeah, the whole thing seemed like it was written by someone who read the book but didn't get any of the jokes

/I know, Adams is partly responsible for the screenplay but he wrote an early draft and mostly the stuff with Malkovich's character was kept - the rest was rewritten.
