I was until they put their stupid target in the wrong place and the Mir missed it.  Then they refused to take my $2 bill.

Since I stopped hitting the drive-thru's on the way to work each night, some years back, I hardly eat out much.  But I consider Taco Bell one of the better ones.

Taco Bell isn't good Mexican food. But for a global chain, it is pretty decent fast food, in my opinion.

(Also- thanks for bringing back green sauce. Next - the tostada and the Enchirito!)

Those Baja Chalupas got me through many stoned nights in college. They got rid of the Baja version now so they're not nearly as good

IT's not susposed to be. Anymore than PapaJohn's is Italian.  It's Tex-Mex fast food. "ol el paso" 70's stuff. Sure, it's not even as good as hometown texmex...but it's kinda the only game in town for middle america.
If you can find these "Sunset" magazine cookbooks they have some solid recipes for basic mexican cooking. Like lvl 101 stuff. but vital. Technically it's Southern California Mexican....technically.

My now dead friend used to regale us with tales of his Taco Bell adventures. Kindest soul on the planet.

He was an absolute wreck of a huge human, and the failure of Taco Bell to distribute the proper amount of hot sauce with his order was the bane of his existence.  He'd routinely order dozens of meals/items at a time, and then get all kinds of frustrated when they handed him half a dozen packets, when he had politely asked for extra hot sauce.

Good luck with that. I've worked at hundreds of the damn things in all sorts of different cities and states, and I've barely been to most of em.

When you pass 4 of em leaving the hotel to get to the one you got to work at all day..

Usually have 4 or 5 plain/dorito tacos for dinner once a week because it's pretty clean, healthy food. A little high in fat but not crazy, just skip the sour cream.

Really miss the Mexican pizza though

There are fans of everything, don't you know?

2021-10-17 11:15:20 AM
I liked Taco Bell as a teenager when there were virtually no Tex Mex options in the suburbs, so there's a bit of nostalgia there. If I'm on a toll highway like the PA Turnpike and a rest stop has a choice between Taco Bell and other fast food outlets, I'm gojng to the former every time. I must have an iron stomach because I've never had the intestinal distress everyone else talks about.

Anyway, wasn't the sandwich in question introduced to glom onto the popularity of the Popeye's craze? Now that the novelty's worn off, why try to compete with a chain that specializes in fried chicken?

2021-10-17 12:30:14 PM
When I was in college and had a lead-lined stomach, and tacos were 39 cents, Taco Bell was my go-to. Can't do it now.

rikdanger: the Enchirito

Call me when they do. Haven't been to one since they dropped it again.

You have all the ingredients but refuse to make an enchirito for a 50 year loyal customer. Make that former customer.

2021-10-17 12:53:34 PM
The loss of the chili cheese burrito and then the loss of the meximelt were the end of taco bell to me. Those two items were the best of the offerings that could be microwaved later.

2021-10-17 1:21:34 PM
I live very close to Taco Bell. I can walk there in two minutes. I bet in the 10 years that I've lived where I'm at I've been there maybe a dozen times. Maybe it's because I'm old but I just don't like it as much as during my youth. My body just can't handle some food like it used to.

/rather go to the restaurant down the street that has soup and pizza made from scratch and freshly made pizza

2021-10-17 1:32:28 PM
Remember those big wax lips and teeth that they sold us as Boomer kids?

No?

You don't see why I mentioned this in a Taco Bell thread?

Did I mention I make my own taco spice powder? It's easy.

You use a lot of chili powder, a bit of chocolate powder for sweetness and browning, and cheese power you can buy in bulk bin food stores. Add other spices to taste, including herbs and garlic powder, black pepper and minced dried garlic or onion. Lasts forever if kept dry and can be made in very small bowls if you want to make it "fresh" each time so as to avoid having way too much.

There is a small family-style taco place on my street. It has old-fashioned, massive furniture, possibly owned by the parents of the restauranteur. The food is like-home cooking I imagine, certainly not as spicy as my own tacos.

2021-10-17 2:34:38 PM
Sounds like they nixed the fried chicken taco they were trying to pass off as a sandwich in promotional materials.

That was fast.

You sound more coherent. Like you're on some proper meds.

I managed to get it once, it actually wasn't bad for what it was (a chicken nugget in a gordita shell) with a bit of vaguely mexican seasoning.  Whatever, it was never anything more than a way to jump onto the tail end of the fried chicken sandwich craze, and now that chicken prices are up don't expect it to stay on the menu.

As far as I know Del Taco still has their version of it.

I thought the old joke was Taco Bell used the same four ingredients? Isn't an enchirito a burrito with enchilada sauce on it? you can get a can of enchilada sauce for 60 cents.

I'm seriously getting sick of hearing about the enchirito. I never even heard of it until after they took it off the farking menu. And only because you guys won't stop whining about it. And I eat taco bell probably once a month at least, used to be more but they charge for delivery.

It's a taco bell menu item. You can make it better, at home, probably cheaper, and go to taco bell for the other stuff that you'd normally get with it but you're too busy boycotting over something just as shiatty as the rest of the menu.

go to an Indian restaurant and ask for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They have all those things. Go ahead. I'll wait.

The only Long John Silver's I have ever seen was a combo with Taco Bell anyway.

Well, actually, there is one here that shares a building with A&W. I didn't know A&W was still in the restaurant business.

They've been in business this long, so yeah, I guess they have "fans."

Like most fast food places, there are a few items that are OK. Most of them are really pretty similar, they just vary in size and/or level of heat.

I've eaten there a couple times in the past year, mostly just as a convenience thing. They're faster than a sit-down restaurant. (shrug) Not better, just faster. They used to have a chicken burrito thingie I enjoyed but I think they stopped offering it years ago.
