Yeah, me again.  Davenport is hiring a library director.  Go for it, or no?

At least it's not South Dakota.

Personally, I wouldn't willingly live anywhere that voted for Donald Trump twice.

Iowa, especially Davenport, sounds pretty cool. I'm sure there are a ton of gay people in Iowa. You'll fit right in.

/I think it's fine to go to any city if you are LBGTQ. The college or university is a good place to find diversity and good people.

Well, this says the city is proud of being pro-pride, so that's a plus.

But as others said, it's Iowa. There's a lot of Iowa there.

The weather is the main thing...can you handle cold weather? It gets friggin cold in the midwest.

/Grew up in northern Minnesota, and shiat doesn't get warm until you hit the Iowa/Missouri line.
//Aside from that, it's beautiful in flyover country.

Well, the competition won't be savage.

And in smaller towns, you might find a 'husband' rather than a steady fbuddy.

Also...look at the flood levels of the place you're renting Davenport floods up every few years.

Well, shiat--you'll fit right in.  LOL.  Though the "beautiful" part might be a bit of a stretch if you currently live in Alaska.

/But Iowa has got Alaska beat on everywhere being within walking distance of a bar or liquor store.

I would never go willingly to Indiana.

I bought a house in southern Illinois though and the people are wonderful. Very kind.

When I visit, I avoid traveling through Indiana

Yeah...don't go for the fancy 'garden' apartment on the first floor. While it's nice. Get a balcony one on the second floor walk up.

Not only that. but I don't like hearing the footsteps of the people above me.  I'll take the walkup.  Thanks.

But then, I'm thinking to buy.  So, maybe not anything near the river.

I've followed your wit and wisdom for a long time, my friend. You'll thrive anywhere.

Go for it.

Iowa is a nice enough place in general, main downside is the lack of any major cities. If you are looking for more extravagant nightlife, major theater productions, etc. you will be driving up to MSP or Chicago.

Weather is on par with Anchorage, in absolute terms not as cold as say MN or interior Alaska, but it is more of a wet cold which I find less pleasant.

As with most of the midwest the urban areas tend to be fairly progressive, the suburban ring vocally conservative, and the rural areas quietly somewhat conservative. I wouldn't expect any more than the usual background bigotry in Davenport.

Lastly, as a few people have mentioned... Look at the flood plats, particularly if you are buying. Most Mississippi cities have a pretty good routine going for handling flooding, but make sure you know what you are getting in to.

2021-10-16 9:32:36 PM
The river is great though. In spite of the flood potential. There is something about any town on the Mississippi that has its pros. Some people become enamored with it. A houseboat could be an option. Winters are gentler that far south from here but even in the Twin Cities some live year round on their boats. Maybe you are or will become a river rat like me.

You need to find a body to really enter the supreme ranks. Something I still aspire to.

It is quite close to Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago.  Up in Sheboygan is the John Michael Kohler Art Center and Art Preserve. Milwaukee has a very good art museum with a spectacular building and Chicago Art Institute is world class.  The Chazen Museum in Madison is quite good.  There's the Frank lloyd Wright home in Spring Green and loads of Wright buildings in that central WI area. If you're into Letterpress the Hamilton Wood Type Museum is up in Two Rivers.  If you like aircraft the EAA museum is up in Osh Kosh.

Btw that EAA museum is on the bucket list of a pilot freind of mine.

I ended up visiting rural Iowa to consult on some fabrication plans to build products and stayed there for 10 days.

Iowans are super happy polite and generous on the outside (the owner of the shop gave me a car for my stay so I would not have to Uber 10miles each way).  It's beautiful and open and I even thought about looking around for a place myself.

After a few days the sameness of the whole population really creeped me out. Herds of pasty slightly obese white people shuffling between their tasks and telling time by the growth of the corn and soy. There is this cult-ish undercurrent of "for the greater good" that seems seeded in extreme Christianity that is just under the surface so that it feels like someone would happily put horse hair or glass shards in your food and smile across from you while you ate it.  I left with no intention of returning, and then the election and vax issues in the state further convinced me.

Just my experience, and that was a more rural area, but maybe do an extended stay to make sure that you get a chance to see beyond the outer shine.

I live in Rock Island. Been in the area since 2005. My wife is from the area; I can tell you that this is a very diverse area and there is a thriving LGBTQ community and Davenport/Bettendorf are progressive cities. It's a growing area, the Quad Cities [we're getting an Amazon distribution center] and the libraries around here are very nice and trafficked. And you wouldn't be the only Farker around.
