If the state issues the plates, it should be able to decide what it will and won't print on them.

Drivers will have to switch to custom license plate frames, or bumper stickers, or window decals, our whatever else they want to farking do. Who cares?

Maybe they can start with people from "Away" and leave the people from "Here" for second.

'"If you can't say it on the 6 o'clock news, it shouldn't be on a license plate."'

So apparently "rape" and "murder" would be perefectly acceptable as license plates.

Maybe rethink that a bit, y'all.

Article's all worried about "free speech rights" while ignoring the fact that there is no such right on state property such as license plates which 49 other states and every other country realizes.

One license plate says simply, "F--Y0U" - except that on the plate, it's plainly spelled out.

IF that's true then I'm actually amazed that was approved and issued.

Either get rid of 'vanity' license plates all together, or let people put whatever they want on them.

As far as I'm concerned, if someone wants to put "fark You" or "I Like to Molest Children", or "Whatever", then that just makes it easier for me to identify the douchbag in my vicinity.

My dad claims to have seen NJ plate "SOD OFF" at one point in the mid '80s.  I myself have seen MA plate "SMOL PP" on a Mercedes-Benz E-class.

They won't get rid of them because they like taking in those extra fees for issuing them.

So if there's a hit an run people should have a bar code reader to make sure they can identify the perp.

Vanity plates are a waste of time and money.
Everything should be properly coded and arranged.

Knew a dude whose plate was CUM-44T

Normal random state plate.

We found it hysterical. At some point the state removed the first part of it from their database of issuable plates. Then they tried to recall it. For the first few years it was polite and he put up a token fight. Finally they pretty much sent him a letter saying, Look, Cum 44 times, your new plate is BZQ1-334, Get used to it, or expect to get pulled over next month.

He had something on DMV letterhead in the final letter that said "ejaculate" on it.

I miss the standard two-tone plates that you could tell the state from a quick glance. They weren't flashy or expressive, but they were clear and informative.

So there was a whole series of CUM plates they had to swap out.  That's hilarious.

Way long ago, my mom bought a car with a plate that was 1DAY4xx.  I thought it might have originally been a birthday present with a personalized plate.  1 day for xx birthday.  Then I went to friend's house and her mom said, "Oh my God!"  Pointed at the plates on her husband's car.  1DAY4yy.

My first car had a plate that ended with 999.  First time one of my friends was looking at the car, he bent down to check out the air shocks and saw the plate as 666.  (It was a '66 Mustang and those cars had a tendency to squat in the back.  Air shocks were an easy way to adjust the ride height.)

If you've got front plates, and a license to ill, people can see them in rear-view mirrors.

I, personally, like the vanity plate that I used to see at work: MOMVAN8 (it was on a Dodge Caravan that was used by someone I knew to schlep their kids around after work to wherever they went to, and the only reason it had the 8 on it was that the numbers 2 -7 were already taken, as was the base MOMVAN).

Am I more bothered by the extra-vain vanity plate, or by the fact this dude with ALS is driving around somewhere around here?
He should have to sport an even bigger, stupider license plate.

Used to have GUANO in the mid 80s until they started charging $25 every year. One time is OK, 25 X 35 = $875! Nope, not worth it.

Rude vanity plates are edgy as a pizza cutter and funny as a bad pun.

The really funny ones are the standard issue ones that come out dirty.

When I was a kid, my parents would always memorize their plate as a Bible verse. We actually had a standard issue plate that was G11ITB for the longest time.
