Yeah. I'm going to have to sort of pass on that. If you could grab me a pint of Skoal vodka, that'd be great. Thanks a bunch.

OctSober rolls off my tongue better than sober October.

Then again, so does a nice smooth bourbon.

I'm enjoying a nice Aventura de Verano at my local tequila bar. Because tequila is perfect for lunch when you don't have any intention of remembering the rest of the day.

I'm a panaholic. I'm a questioner of sobriety and I find sober people to be queer.

I would never do it, but I have a friend that does because she knows she'll drink at a lot of functions during the holidays.

To me that sounds like running a race without training one bit, but to each their own.

Sobriety is a gateway drug. Just say no.

I went sober about three years ago. Best decision I ever made for me, personally. I have no desire to go back... except during October. October is made for beer. Germans even made a whole festival revolving around the confluence of October and beer. Sober October is like Low-cal Thanksgiving.

I've had a few of them. The problem is that they just don't taste the same, and I'm not just talking about the lack of booze. Alcohol is an excellent solvent for things that don't quite dissolve inwater, so you get somewhat different things than you do by macerating in water or glycerine (ick) or steam distillation plus rubbing with magnesium carbonate.

Even if you get pretty close ethanol itself has a taste, and that flavor is always part of the mix when you make a spirit. Without it the booze-free gin or whiskey or spicy substitute is missing an important part of the overall smell/taste experience. Imagine a lot of Indian foods if you just pulled out the cumin, turmeric, and cardamom and served as is or tried to fill in with citrus and chipotle peppers.

Eventually they will get better, but they won't ever be the same. And that's fine. As long as they taste good and complement the food and aren't just vehicles for sugar they will be a welcome addition to the table for those who currently look at their sad glasses of lemonade and coffee.

You sound like you're on a roll. Don't let me stop you. We had a thread; Octoberfest is celebrated in September, but then, Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October. Consider yourself fashionably late.

Some mocktails are delicious, if you add two or three shots of booze,

Well it's not like you ever had a problem with booze in the first place, if you can drink for a couple days and just go right back to sobriety.

What's wrong with Oktoberfest?  A vastly longer tradition of beer...

A glass of lemonade with club soda and a splash of your favorite bitters mix is actually really tasty.  Not a "mocktail", but a delicious and refreshing thing all by itself.

I think part of our problem is we don't really have a category of "non-alcoholic beverages with complex flavors adult people drink for novelty and pleasure" that isn't juice, super sugary sodas, or coffee mixed with sugar and ice cream.

The article made me think of the punch my grandma used to make for kid birthday parties: rainbow sherbet floating in a sea of 7-Up.  It was glorious, but it's a miracle our teeth didn't rot right out of our skulls.

I think HTD said it best: for what you get in a "non-alcoholic spirit" you can just as easily get it in a couple dashes of bitters for 1/50th of the price. And yeah, there's alcohol in bitters. Good luck getting drunk off Angostura.

You have to build up to it, I guess.

I'm all too aware of when it starts. My wife brings back pretzels and beer from Munich straight from Octoberfest there. The fridge is filled with different cans with blue and white squares. I don't even want to know if there are any dunkels in there. The pretzels, although stale when I get them, are appreciated.

Some of those sound like they would make fine mixers. Maple, hops, anise and black pepper? I'd give that a shot.

I'm sober curious in that I've occasionally tried it, but I went back to drinking once I got married.

Looks like juice or some sort of training wheels with your tequila.

Cutting the good stuff with mixers is pollution y'all.

Why all or nothing? How about a splash of alcohol, like seasoning? It would make all mocktails better. Bitters are usually 90 proof.

I wish Rick Steve was more culinary centric. He has some great shows but most don't fit here. Anyway. we have a diverse tab: Pork BBQ, no pork, briskets, no meat, vegetarian, vegan, lacto-intolerant, celiac, keto, Atkins, you name it, somebody has an aversion to consuming something. I like being a pretty well-rounded omnivore. People that can't or won't drink are missing out on a great food group.

Sober October is how you end up with JesusWeen. You think you're showing people how righteous you are, but you end up just making it hard on the children by the end of the month.
