Humor happens when you go against what's expected and surprise people with something they're not anticipating, like the New York Jets winning a game.

That's pretty funny. I might have to check out this airplane movie.

What's really in short supply are good old fashioned gladiator movies.  Especially the ones in which cuisine is discussed.

Yeah, because the guys who made Scary Movie made a lot of money, and parody movies are shot to shiat. I love Scary movie 1 and 2, because while they were pardoies, they werent just a very unfunny live action version of Family Guy. They had a plot and structure.

If Robot Chocken is still being made, comedy usong wit and dark jokes can still be made, you whiney twits. South Park is still on, you cry babies. Sorry you miss Crank Yankers.

It would have to get reworked. Airplane was spoofing the disaster flick wave that permeated the 70s (Towering Inferno, Earthquake, and specifically Airport and all the sequels), but making lite of modern disaster flicks can be made. Or is TFA another wokelord proclaiming "This could never be made today!" Because of a security scan shot of boobs and making light of talking jive?

Considering a good number of the main characters are dead, it would be hard making Airplane! today.
Oh, we're having the discussion in terms of whether our hypersensitive culture could tolerate the off-color jokes without erupting into full-blown histrionics. Who cares?  People will b*tch about anything.

I think Zucker overestimates how subversive his comedy was. Mel Brooks at his best was miles better. By comparison, Zucker's movies were like filming Johnny Knoxville he ring hit in the balls.

Eeeh, I'm not so sure about that. Airplane, Naked Gun, Police Squad, Top Secret are holding up just fine.
Some of Mel's films, not so much. And I'm not talking about cowboys using the n-word around the camp fire, I'm talking about the films being kind of a slog and jokes that don't land half the time.

Right, but starting with Spaceballs, Mel Brooks changed his style and tried to copy Zucker Bros films.

Robin Hood, Dracula, he was absolutely going for Airplane/Naked Gun (even having a miscast Leslie Nielsen in Dracula)

Also, and I use this example on Fark a lot, he started EXPLAINING the jokes which makes them inherently unfunny.

In Robin Hood, the character Blinkin enters.
Dave Chappelle says "Hey Blinkin!"
The blind guy says "Abe Lincoln??"

That's the joke.

But then he has Dave explain "I didn't say Abe Lincoln, I said Hey Blinkin"

Joke ruined.

Maybe reference a show or movie that's been produced in the past decade? One that isn't grandfathered in by 20 years of precedi?

There aren't many movies you can point to that changed their genre, but Airplane is one that certainly did.

If for no other reason than the huge increase of the pacing of the jokes.

The same guys did Kentucky Fried Movie a few years prior, but it didn't really break out like Airplane did.

Plus, it was more like sketch comedy than a movie.

That's one of those franchises that got so much worse over time that you forget that the first couple weren't nearly as terrible.

The budget was $3.5 million. So I am sure there are a few dozen direct-to-video companies that would make it. And easily make their money back.

Oh, wait, you weren't asking seriously. Next hot take up ...

Scary movie was just a legally distinct Scream. It wasnt a tumbling avalanche of sketch comedy. I won't say there were no sketches. But the spoofs fit into the movie universe.

The series definitely did not improve over time. The Nike commercial spoof and Weakest Link bird adds literally nothing in SM2. But having Wayne do the black drama man news interview fit into something in the movie universe, along with the main girl getting run over, as she was screaming into the sky, like scream, but on a road. That being the joke, a subversion of what happened in the original movie.

I won't ever say that Scary Movie were great movies, but the preformed well, have a fandom, but did fall off a cliff. They changed parody movie cinema, but did herald the end of parody movies. Naked Gun 3 is proof it was on the way out.

Robot Chicken is barely above the "Epic Movie" parodies of the 2000s, replacing jokes with references.

Most non-bong water drinkers already knew this.

I was going to link a Lindsay Ellis video here but apparently that one is Nebula exclusive.  Anyway, she has a pretty good one about whether Blazing Saddles could be made today and to summarize; no.  But only because it wouldn't be funny today, because comedy is a fast-moving target.  The idea that you can't be edgy or subversive today is pretty sharply undercut by the fact that Jojo Rabbit won shiatloads of awards, and if nobody's laughing at your jokes, maybe it's because you're not funny.

2021-10-16 8:09:57 AM
Oh, I love this discussion, where we theorize if a comedy made a generation ago could be made today. Humor totally works that way!

Colour_out_of_Space: "Funny, she doesn't look Druish"
Spaceballs sucked. There, I said it.

That's another example.

He named the planet Druidia solely for the purpose of making a Druish Princess joke.

Another from Robin Hood (which is the same joke as the Blinkin joke) he says "Here's my friend, Achoo"
And the other guy says "A Jew?!?"
And he then says "Not a Jew, Achoo!"

Don't get me wrong, love Mel Brooks.  Just disappointed in his later films.
