(New Musical Express)   Jimmy Page seems to think Phil Collins being a second drummer for Led Zeppelin ruined their performance at Live Aid, and not the out of tune guitar. Still couldn't have topped Queen that day   (nme.com) divider line

BOOM! All true and there we have it. We can now put this controversy and 1985 to rest.

//Queen did kick everyone's ass that day but the entire live broadcast was something to behold.

It's been a loooong time since I saw this but I really didn't remember his guitar solo on stairway sucking as bad as what I just saw.

Collins might not have been the right drummer but it wouldn't have mattered if Page had played like he gave a shiat that night.

"The drummer couldn't get the beginning of 'Rock And Roll'," Page explained about Live Aid. "So we were in real trouble with that."

Is Rock and Roll the song where haters claim that Page is playing in 5/4 and Bonham doesn't get it and is playing in 4/4? I have no idea if that's true and it probably isn't, but if it was that would probably fark up any outside player.

They probably should have rehearsed it and listened to what it sounded like before they tried it live.

The drums come in on an odd beat but everything eventually matches up. The song is in 4/4.

Page has always been a notoriously sloppy live player. It's part of his "charm". Also, I'm fairly certain Page was knackered on heroin at that point in his life. I'm thinking heroin + playing guitar in front of a billion + people can effect one's performance.

I vaguely remember the concert, and when they came out, it didn't sound like anything familiar.. but I'll admit that I'd rarely heard Led Zeppelin at that point in my life.

Queen did put a nice clean sound together.  That's nice. I'm glad the theater kids liked them.  Still overrated.
Phil Collins would have fit in better with Queen with his on top of the world for pandering to album sales executives with radio friendly stuff that sometimes makes me sing along if I'm not paying attention.  Air Supply was better.

oh god.  as im sure others have said, page was a bumbling, drunken stumbling fool in that set. smoke half hanging out of his mouth, drooling, and a dropped guitar that took it out of tune (not that he had any ability to play well that day). Combo that with robert plant unable to sing to his level any more and well...

Heres footage of what i consider one of his best works... but live aid was a travesty.

I had just helped somebody move/drive cross-country the day of Live Aid. Summer after my sophomore year. We arrived in New York City the day of the concert, and unloaded the car and UHaul trailer, and I said hey we should go to the concert. I thought JFK Stadium and JFK Airport were the same place. But the guy guy who had been driving for days was not into going anywhere except to rest. It wasn't until much later I realized that part of the concert wasn't in NYC.

But we did set up the TV and get to watch a little bit. I think we left to go eat and I missed most of it. So it goes.

It is sad seeing musicians destroying their talent with drugs. It such a lame cliche. And I've heard people say, "Yeah, but what else are you going to do with all that money?" which is nonsensical.

If Jimmy Page had decided to build a space boner with all the money he spent on heroin, what would it look like?

Some people just take Aleister Crowley too literally.

I do think  Bill Ward,'Ginger Baker or Carmen Appice may have been a better fit stylistically but Phil held his own. Page on the other hand blew hard

Bonham had the classic Straining at Stool beat. Collins could only master Aneurysm or Infarction.

Jimmy got off smack in '82. So find another reason as to why he sucked.

Led Zep has always sucked live. Even their live album sucked except for the title song and no telling how many surgeries it took to clean that one up.

2021-10-16 12:19:33 PM
Haha, ok Jimmy, go ahead and throw Phil Collins under the bus, but to my ears at least, Collins' performance is second only to JPJ, followed closely by whoever the other drummer was that day.

And waaaaaaaaaay down in 4th and 5th place would be Plant and Page, respectively.

If you get the chance to see them live do it. They put on an amazing show and are all super talented. Saw them 1 month before everything shut down and hope they come back this way some day.

If you caught them on the right night they could be fantastic, but that night only happened for a few shows on  later tours.

He was quite sloshed from '83 onwards to about '95.  Then, after a third disastrous Led Zeppelin short reunion for their Hall of Fame induction, he seemed to sober up.  He even admitted that the 2007 show was the first time he'd done any Zeppelin show sober.  So when you think about it, from '77 onwards it was hit or miss.  So before then, he was at very minimum buzzed and pulled off amazing feats of guitar playing.

Phil Collins had no problem nailing the drums for Robert Plant in his solo work.

Maybe if Page had been a bit more motivated and open to the concert, it would have gone off better (and Collins wouldn't have been so alienated)

So Page was drunk and slovenly, Plant's voice was totally shot....but somehow the fault is Phil Collins??

The night before, Plant performed in Detroit. That show's audio can be found on the web now - it's a terrific performance. Only known performance of Plant's oft regarded track, "Sixes and Sevens."

Clearly, he needed a rest because overall, Plant didn't sound good at Live Aid either.

Thank heavens that they did the O2 show and cleared up a long line of horrid performances, including the Atlantic 40th Anniversary mess and then the flaming dumpster fire that was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I only wish they'd done a few more shows, or at least include one track from In Through The Out Door.

More accurately, you never knew which Zep you were gonna get when they walked onstage. Sometimes legends but oftentimes they had too many and decided to experimental jam out to whatever beat they each heard in their heads. Even they didn't get to pick which one it was on any given day.
