It's not that complicated. Girls in horror movies appear more vulnerable than some jock, which makes the chase more exciting and the resulting victory a bigger deal.

Movie audiences like girls, and underdogs.  The trope includes both.

Counterpoint:

Here's a fun essay that makes the case that Predator pivots to a slasher movie in the 2nd act, and that Arnold Schwarzenegger is, in fact, the best-ever 'Final Girl':

Ah, I farked up the time-code.  The section that starts at 10:12 has the setup, and the Final-Girl payoff is at ~12:45.

Hey, I just finished that book a few days ago. Fun read, and great homage to the slasher genre. Personally I preferred his previous, The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. That one worked on so many levels, from horror to coming of age to 80s nostalgia etc.

On a slightly related note, also just watched the movie The Final Girls, which was more entertaining than it should have been. Highly recommend for Halloween watching if you're a fan of Cabin in the Woods and Tucker and Dale style horror comedy.

The concept of the Final Girl is born out of necessity in my opinion. In the story the killer has chased down and killed everyone else of every gender. You want to have one last survivor to face off against the killer. No matter the gender of the killer, a male last survivor would be expected to have a better chance than a 'girl'. So you get an automatic boost in suspense simply by making that last survivor a girl. That's why so many times there is a final girl.

I'm just here to state for the record that I have never before now heard of the 'final girl' trope/cliche and to confess that it doesn't sound particularly interesting to me, a middle aged man.

It doesn't require that you think it is interesting. If you are a fan of horror movies it is simply a matter of fact. If not, then yeah you won't really give a crap. Being a middle aged man has nothing to do with it. If you can't identify with someone as a human being because you are a different gender and a different age, that reflects on you and you alone.
