Leaf peeping is also going to take a hit with the pandemic still being a thing. But, maybe folks should just appreciate the things a li'l closer to home anyway. If you're always looking for the greener grass over the fence, you tend to ignore your own acres.

Leaf peeping?  When the hell did that term become a thing?

BunkyBrewman: Leaf peeping?  When the hell did that term become a thing?

THE MACMILLAN English Dictionary, in the October, 2003 issue of their online magazine, put it like this:
"THE UNCOUNTABLE noun leaf peeping was also coined in the early eighties, and ... describes the activity of seeking out places where a large number of trees have adopted their autumnal colors.

Yeah, the leaves on my trees are weird this year.  While most leaves are still green there no other colors than the brown, dead leaves.  There is usually a range of orange/yellow.  It really does look like shiat so far this year.

Dry weather makes for poor Fall color.  Summer was very dry in the PNW and about the only trees with any color are on properties where people watered their lawns all summer. Our oaks and maples are all brown.  Our new fruit trees haven't changed yet.

The red trees came out last weekend around here. Should be yellow this weekend. I'm planning to kayak through a chain of lakes that should be quite pretty on Saturday. You could consider me a Peeping Tromb.

But, the Norway Maples in the city already look like crap. They are infested with some sort of fungus that causes leaf spots in late summer. They just dry up and die and don't turn colors any more. It has gotten a lot worse over the past 10 years to the point that the city is working to cut them all down and replace them with better (native Acadian forest) trees.

Since when have people started calling it leaf peeping?
The first time I head that term was a few days ago and now it's everywhere

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I mean really... there isn't much that can be done since people want fatter wallets and someone else to clean up the messes that cause these problems even though they themselves made the mess in the first place like most businesses/people do.

They do.  it snowed lately, and the green leaves are still on my lilac and my tree, turning to poo.
I watch that lilac bush to see how climate change is going.  and it's never had leaves on it into October.  But it was 70 degrees here not too long ago.

Would you like to hear about the aspens on the hill next to me?  I watch those too.  If only I drove my car 150 miles to do that, I could be cool too.

The day some marketing executive thought it up.

Get out there, drive around!  Drive more!  Take pictures!  pose!  Take more pictures!  Drive, drive, drive!  Stop to eat, chat about what a quaint little town this is, and how you'd like to live in a place like this someday, if only you didn't spend so much time in the city, raping the planet so that you can afford to go on leaf peeping tours.
it's because you just love nature SO MUCH.

Oh I see, it's okay for leaves to peep, but when I do it in the women's locker room, *I'm* the bad guy.

Since I moved to Maine, which was in the 80s at least. Flatlandahs like to drive, and Mainers like to take their money. The Circle of Life.
